The liberal Air America Radio network this week announced the launch of a fundraising project to help its struggling programs expand into more markets.
In an e-mail to supporters, the network announced the Air America Associates program, which encourages donors to give $50, $100 or $250 to the company.
"When we launched the Air America Radio network one year ago," the e-mail states, "the country was being talked to death by conservative zealots like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and others."
Since its launch in March 2004, Air America has expanded from 16 stations to 70 stations, and states in the e-mail that it now covers 60 percent of the U.S. media market.
"To continue this great success story and start shaping the national debate the way that Right Wing talk radio does every day," the e-mail explains, "we've got to reach into every community in this country. We know we can't achieve this next stage of growth without significant help from you, our loyal listeners."
Air America donors receive bumper stickers and tote bags, depending on the amount of their donation. They will also receive a subscription to a newsletter from the network.
The network recently came under fire for a financial scandal that ended with the network agreeing to repay more than $875,000 to the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club in New York.
Ratings for Air America programs, such as the one anchored by comedian Al Franken, remain low compared with the conservative-themed offerings from Limbaugh and Hannity. In New York City, the number one radio market in the country and where Air America broadcasts on WLIB, ratings have slipped in the past year.
In this age of the Internet, subscriptions aren't uncommon in talkradio. Limbaugh's faithful can spend $49.95 for one-year to "Rush 24/7".

Air America, should be heard by as many undecided's as possible. The more they speak out, the louder they yell, the more we benefit.
It seems like every liberal cause gives away a free tote bag. From what I understand, if you stacked the tote bags end to end, it'd reach the moon and back.
Who'da thought the liberals have that much to carry?
APf
Yeah, it was all those envelopes stuffed with small bills that we sent Rush Limbaugh that made him successful!!!
Gee, the left has quite the dilemma-- donate to NPR or donate to Air America. Well, at least NPR is entertaining drivel. Of course, NPR is nowhere near as rabidly anti-Bush....
Seems to me that once again, the free market is working!
AL FRANKEN
They're just typical liberals. Always looking for a handout and someone else to pick up the tab.
"Seems to me that once again, the free market is working!"
Liberals can't run a business to save their lives. Managing money is not their thing.

Conservatives who get high ratings because they make sense
and are talented and interesting. They make lots of money doing this and attract many advertisers. But who would want to advertise on AAR...big corporations? Why would they want to advertise on a network that despises corporations? And
advertisers want to get their word out on stations that actually HAVE listeners, and lots of them. Every time the TALKERS magazine list of the most listened to hosts comes out, we see Rush, Hannity, Savage, Ingraham, O'Reilly--
millions upon millions of listeners. Where are
Franken, Springer, Rhodes on that list?
>>Managing money is not their thing.
And politically, spending "other people's money" (but
ask them to fork over some dough, and watch their
wallets and purses close quickly)
>>they were going to be the next huge thing in broadcasting
If so, why the low ratings? And, for that matter, since
Kerry was supposed to be such a genius, how come he didn't beat that "dummy" Bush, and handily? People saw through Kerry and his ridiculous campaign (let's betray our country and then
"report for duty" at the DNC!)--and if he couldn't win the election, how could he run the country? Similarly, AAR
had a chance to use talent (like they had any) to make
entertaining and informative radio, but all they got
was amazingly low ratings, a fundraising scandal, and now
an attempt to do commercial radio as if it were public
radio. Give $100 and get a tote bag!
At the $250 donation, they will say your name over the air.
Al Franken saying FreeRepublic.com would be a hoot!
Which explains why they generally don't run businesses, but get elected. Then they get to handle other poeple's money again - and the management gets worse!
I am willing bet the the tote bags are made from OIL, and is a huge waste of oil.
