Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VIII
www.freerepublic.com | September 24, 2005

Posted on 09/24/2005 9:58:36 AM PDT by Howlin

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Just today, he was calling out a "govt. official" for what he considered wrong information on when the people will be able to return to NO...and what damage is being done with the new rain..

I noticed that too. He was upset with the a city official of Lakeview for information he gave to a local radio station. Odd.

IMO, New Orleans should and will be rebuilt, for all the right reasons. Because people have roots there. Because of the uniqueness and charm of the culture there. Because of the productive assets there. Because people want to live there. President Bush was right when he said one cannot imagine a USA without New Orleans.

Thus, the levees must and will be improved. Thus the homes and businesses must and will be rebuilt. New Orleans will be better than it was before the storm.

But to make it better, New Orleans and Louisiana owes those of us who will help a debt -- this to reform the abysmally corrupt political system therein. I for one object to my hard earned wages being confiscated to reward some corrupt official, who in turn rewards some corrupt businessman.

Not that I have much choice or control in the matter. But I hope and pray that the debacle of Katrina has opened some eyes.

I have been putting Momma's china in the dishwasher for 25 years. Is that a mistake?

LOL! NO! I came home every day covered with black tarnish.

This lady has chafing dishes, candlesticks, tea and coffee sets, trays, pitchers...the works! She has collected for years...used to buy it with her bonus money when she worked at Allison's!

I have never seen so much silver in my life! And she knows all the best polishes and treatments! I was polishing and she was lecturing me on what to buy and how to use it...and also telling me about where she got each piece.

It was very interesting.

Oh my, well, I think it wasn't a mistake 25 years ago but now, the china is working up to keepsake status. Sort of like an ancient relative. Mean old Uncle John at 55 becomes dear ole outspoken Uncle John at 85.

It is never too late to change.

DO mostly primitives and old tools....

Only five sets of dishes here, but none of them antique....Use all but one....The Nortake! Have thought about selling it.

You brought her great joy.

I hope you did some things wrong so she could correct you.

Some of'em are more trustworthy short time than long range, too...Loops are rare...Juan did one, and Ivan did one...lets hope Rita doesn't do one.

But Phillipe's remains are possibly going to form a new tropical system. Wonder if they'll rename it or go back to Phillipe?

I heard that remark made by Blank-o. I really think the stress of this situation has made her lose her mind.

Wouldnt be surprised to hear of her going home to spend more time with her family after this is over.

Anybody hear from Nagin since Rita? That guy has the good sense to KNOW he's in over his head.

I like teapots. And they have a tendency to get broken lids. So I bought a metal one.

This is the last public advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center on Rita.

We hope... At one time weren't they predicting it may make a fish hook and head back to the gulf?...

that MUST be a joke... please tell me it is!

Unlike some around here, I've had a healthy respect for (at least some) Accuweather forecasters for over twenty years. If that is what they are calling right now, they have to be off their rocker and _I'll_ be reevaluating my being a fan...

I like jugs too.

My grandmother had dishes with big fat strawberries on them. I do to, so I buy things with strawberries, have strawberry wallpaper in the kitchen.

My husband loves strawberry stuff to. The big fat Tangipahoa strawberries.
