Okay, now that the worst of the storm is over, it's time to start counting heads. If you were in the path of the storm, please check in on this thread.

We just got back from check out my parents' house in Champion Forest. We traveled from our house along Spring Cypress and back through Longwood. Lots of little debris on the road but no major trees blocking the roads.
Power looks to be out in Coles' Crossing and Longwood, as well as along the area by Compaq.
NO GAS ANYWHERE. NO STORES OPEN. We will not be getting out again until the fuel trucks roll into town.
The funny thing is, the rain is finally starting to come down over here.

Glad to hear you're OK. If you're going to dump ice, dump it in the gulf, maybe it'll cool it down enough that the next storm that comes through won't have warm water for fuel :o)
I have family just NW of Jones and Grant Rd and they were without power from 0200 until about 0800.

The worst we have had are some pretty feisty gusts, some that have managed to rattle our windows every now and again, but very little rain and very little in the way of anything like a hurricane. There was one small blip of no power yesterday evening as the hurricane sent its first bands into Texas, but beyond not being able to access my computer for all of five minutes (that includes turning it back on) and lighting one oil candle to keep at hand just in case it went out again, we spent the evening hanging out.
I hope everyone else had an uneventful night as well. The report I heard this morning was that there were no deaths immediately connected to Rita, for which I am very very grateful...thank you God!....but hope the return to normal is less frantic and fraught with anxiety as the ramp up.
My sincerest wishes and prayers for everyone!

Stayed up all night watching all the live coverage.
One of the 'newbies' from San Antonio that got the "oh.. just stand out there in 120mph winds and rain and give us a report" was down in Beaumont and had on a blue rain slicker with the hood tied up tight around her face with just her eyes, nose and mouth showing and she looked just like Kenny from South Park and she was just as dumb as a rock. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Every time she would come back
on with a report, trying to stand up in all of that wind and getting pounded by the rain wearing that blue slicker, all I could think was "Oh No!!! Their gonna kill Kenny!!" It was just tooo funny.
I hope everybody is ok and doing well.
And we have them all the way up to Texas! the Brazos Bend State Park here where I live is rife with them, and earlier this year, some people in Matagorda county found a 14 footer in the local creek there.

I'm still ok up in Ft. Worth. Looks like I'll be hear until at least Mon. afternoon, if not Tues. when the local officials say that it is ok to go back.
The big concern is having enough gas in place for essential support services, and then for people returning.
Otherwise it looks like the Galveston/Houston area dodged the bullet named Rita.
Anyone who is thinking of heading out, please stay put until they give you the OK. There are folks in serious need and they have to be able to get the rescue vehicles and food and water through to them. Please stay off the freeway.

I have talked to friends in Jasper this morning and they say it looks like a war zone. The residential areas are hardest hit because that's where the trees are. The trees on the courthouse square are gone. My friends have downed trees but none on their houses. One has a neighbor across the street with 3 pine trees on his house. No electricity and only have cell phones--when they work. One has a covered bridge (she likes them and her husband had it built for Christmas one year) on their land that normally is dry; rain water runs under it. It has water almost to the top.
I'm hoping somebody Tivo'd Shep losing his hats and desperately trying to hang onto them. Put together, that would make one funny video!
