T-Shirt Prompts Mayor To Boycott Clothing Store

BOSTON -- When NewsCenter 5 showed a controversial T-shirt to Mayor Thomas Menino, he was so upset he called for the boycott of the store selling it.

NewsCenter 5's Jorge Quiroga reported that the T-shirt's slogan, "Stop Snitchin'," is street slang for, "Don't cooperate with police."

This is somewhat reminiscent of the Che Guevara shirts being sold in some stores.

When I see a numbskull wearing one of those Che Guevera shirts, I feel like taking a poke at him. As for Menino, I never know how anyone can understand what he is saying.

the mayor is totally within his rights under the constitution to personally call for a boycott - it is called free speech!

He cannot officially call for a boycott as the mayor.

The shirt contains an implied threat to the lives of those who cooperate with police (see the crosshairs).

Threatening witnesses to crime is itself a crime.

The manufacturer and distributor of the shirts should be warned they are aiding/abetting crime, and be shown the state statutes.

Must be an east coast thing. Here in Alaska, I've seen a judge order someone out of the courtroom for wearing a tee shirt with raised middle finger depicted on it.

Judges generally have pretty free reign on the decorum in their courtrooms.

The rest of the story states that Marshall's is removing the shirts from their shelves. I agree, the Mayor was perfectly correct to be concerned. Sounds like the buyer for Marshall's "Juniors Department" may need firing.

Ive seen middle aged people wearing these shirts here in Jersey. Sickening! These cretins should be advocating decency and morality not capitulation. And the punks in those damned Che shirts! I want to throttle them.

I saw one of these tee just today for the first time.

Blacks don't like people cooperating with the police which is why their communities are overrun and controlled by criminals.

Until blacks clean up their act and start talking to the cops, there will be no end to violence in their communities.

I saw the same thing happen when I was in traffic court in one of the Atlanta counties (I didn't get to see the message on the shirt though). I'm also reminded of that scene in My Cousin Vinny when the Alabama judge makes it clear to Joe Pesci that leather jackets will not be tolerated in his court.

I think it's a perfect cause for action against the shirt's designer (inciting to violent crime).

Were it a government official, there'd surely be an investigation. But here the threat is against lowly witnesses...
