It is *not* a good smell. I've never smelled anything like that before - except for after the LA Riots when the burned out buildings started decaying, and then it was overlaid by a burned smell.

It's like a combination of rotting vegetation, stagnant water, and rotting meat.

Sounds to me like the water is so rough that it's churning up 30 years worth of gunk from the bottom of the bay. And seeing as smell is the most provoking on the memory cells - you'll be ahead of the game the NEXT time you're in a hurricane!

Have you ever smelled a lake turning over? Or the water coming from it? Sounds something like what you're describing, with a faint "fishey" smell added.

Sounds like how they describe New Orleans. That would be my guess.
