Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.
An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.
On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.
Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

It's a tough call really... I would hope it's sooner, but FEMA does warn about not counting on ANY help for 72 hours on their website. I don't think that's changed. If it's sooner I think the credit will go to local officials - PD and FD.
It's a blessing ;^)
Fire is covered by insurance....
Flooding is not.
Went out for another sniff. It has a salty tinge to it, too.
Shep and Geraldo finally cost Fox this viewer, the day New Orleans flooded. For the last six months or so, they seem to have been trying to solidify their attainment of #1 status by emulating those they overcame, forgetting the fact that their rise resulted from offering an alternative.
I watch cable news for news. When FNC began letting the "personalities" take over, I began looking around. When the personalities gave up all pretense of reporting in their "look at me" zeal become the news, I gave up. From what I'm reading on this thread, Shep, Geraldo, and Greta haven't given up their quest for attention at any cost, so they'll do without mine.
I still watch Brit Hume's show every weekday; ironically, the only FNC program still providing any real news is an hour set aside for commentary and opinion.
I get up-to-the-minute news from FR and elsewhere on the Internet, and I have battery-powered radios for local emergencies.
I'm concerned about Rita, as I was about Katrina, but I want current "big picture" news of such events. During news events of this magnitude and effect, I can't muster even passing interest in whether the winds at some given place can topple Geraldo again, or in whether Shep's hats blow off the same way this mere mortal's would if I stood in the same wind. Most of us are aware that the approach of a hurricane is typically accompanied by strong winds, and I'm not sure Fox's advertisers can survive on the patronage of those who aren't... So she and her fans won't feel left out, I'll mention another fact Fox will ignore: I'll not give Greta the opportunity to set me off again by bringing out Natalie Holloway's exploited mother in raingear and a backwards ballcap, so Greta's advertisers are missing opportunities, too...
There. Anyone not offended? Sorry; my A/C's out, there's no hint of a breeze here, it's still ninety-two degrees at my desk, Mama's out having a good time at ACLFest with the kids and the other hippies, Austin's not expecting looters worthy of this bellyfull of beer and my Hi-Power, and I'm trying very hard to find things to be p!$$ed about that don't smack of self-pity. What? Oh. Okay, I'll try again tomorrow...
I raise you 40 for Geraldo getting his a*** kick by Hurricane LOL!
