Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

I like Geraldo, too... he has a soft heart... I think he's kind of a Barnum & Bailey type of guy and drama follows him.

Hang in everybody, especially those of you in the path of the storm. I've enjoyed the evening, but I need to get some rest.

We're going to Hershey Park early tomorrow morning. It's odd, I went to Kings Dominion park two days after Katrina hit.

Maybe I should let Shep know when I'm going down to Busch Gardens again, so he can get another supply of hats....

Something sexy about ole Shep.

Well, compared to Cooper (or is it Anderson? Can never figure out which his first or last name), Tucker, Geraldo, etc - most gals like me would rather watch Shep, no matter what the story!

She's going to come in ~935mb. I'm still amazed at how low the pressure is.

Why not tow an iceberg or two in the path to cool the water down. Ok maybe a problem or two with this idea.

12:00 AM - Happy Saturday. Per the latest NHC advisory, the center of Hurricane Rita is approximately 40 miles south-southeast of Sabine Pass, moving northwest at 11 mph. The advisory also states that Cameron had a peak gust of 98 mph!

Of all people, on a night like this on the Channel 12News feed Susan Sarandon is being interviewed by Craig ____? (that guy from Drew Carey's show.) Maybe it's a rerun.

Shep Smith does an excellent job reporting for Fox News and has been doing so since he joined the network.

Last summer Shepard Smith called John O'Neill and the Swiftboat Vets liars on his program. He has never retracted nor apologized for that statement. The only possible explanation for saying it was either unbelieveable ignorance, or brazen dishonesty. I will not forget.

I am going to shut this down. I hate to complain, but dammit, it's getting awfully windy here and I just hate the thought of losing power again and the local news almost promised we would.

Our 100+ year old trees are already bending and I see a fairly large limb has already fallen on the side street. The wind is blowing enough to "hear" it.

I want to avoid a power surge so I think it's best to shut this off entirely.

If I'm not back later or in the monring... you'll know why.

Prayers for all in Rita's reach.
