Does anyone else think this sounds like the Ant and the Grasshopper parable? For decades they have known that the levees could not withstand a cat4 storm, and you and I have sent them hundreds of millions of dollars over the past four decades to address the problem. For the same decades, the citizens of NO turned their heads as their elected officials frittered away our money and lined their own pockets. Well, Mr. Piper is coming to town and he demands to be paid...BY THE CITIZENS OF NEW ORLEANS. Adjust your property taxes to reflect the true cost of living there. Place a hotel and restaurant tax on those who visit there to help fund it. And while you're fixing things, you may want to dump your elected officials, from the mayor on up to your state's senator. I fail to see why the rest of US should pay for something that you've already been given the money to fix.

They need to go soak their heads in the 9th Ward.

I think all federal education funding should be cut to pay for this. And funding for the Nat'l Endowment for the Arts, too. And all federal farm bill funding, and federal funding for abortions--I can think of lots of ways to pay for this monstrosity.
To: econjack
Why not just round it off and make it an even zillion?

Landrieu says ... "It's not a local problem. It's not a state problem. It's a national tragedy and it needs an unprecedented national response."Perfect description of the Democrat Party ...

". Louisiana can fix this with taxes of their own."
I agree. If people want to live below sea level, they can pay for it.
Feds should pay for infrasturture repairs for anything above sea level. Bulldoze the rest, plant some grass seed, and call it Nagin/Blanco memorial park.

What you said, also:
The non-federal match could be cash or services, labor or equipment.
Hello, "Who's Your Daddy?" bloated invoices.

After they locate the offshore and on shore accounts these pols and their families have been stashing the federal money for decades.
After they go after the environmental lobby that held up levee and sea wall improvements and make them reimburse the tax payers for their frivolous, junk science lawsuits.
After they sell off the property purchased with government funds earmarked for levee improvements but used elsewhere.
After the indictments of State FEMA and other State/Local politicians for corruption trials are over.
after all of that is done, we'll talk, Mary.

Why not just make it a Kazillion? It's just our tax money after all, and there's no limit on that.
