He's spot on. This is going to haunt the GOP moving forward. The party is morphing into Democrats Light.

I think the budget grew even under Reagan but at least he did try.

Bush is not only not a conservative, he would have been called a radical leftist maybe 100 years ago.

For someone invokign Reagan's name, however, he seems to have forgotten the 11th Commandment.

Many Republicans in both the House and Senate are using Bush as a cop-out and an excuse. They have the power of the purse. They can cut whatever they darn well please and then see what happens. The fact is that too many of their fellow Republicans in congress agree with the President and are not interested in fiscal responsibility. All that you have to do to see the problem is to watch Mr. fiscal conservative himself, Ron Paul. How many billions is he going to want for his district after Rita passes through?

We taxpayers are screwed and that's the bottom line...

THis is crap, under Reagan the budget exploded not only defense spending but ever dept increased greatly. and yes Reagan used the Veto, some because he had a Democratic control Congress for the most part. Last time I took a civics class it is the congress that passes the budget, you want to be pissed, be pissed at the republicans in congress like Rohrabacher. Yes, Bush has taken the easier political route of not vetoing bills so he won't be accused of starving kid's school lunches or having the media scream about the "split republican party" by not vetoing bills from a republican controlled house.
One thing is true the Republican Party is no longer the Republican party it is fast becoming the Donner party.

He absolutely is right. One thing is for sure, Bush has reformed the REpublican party into a hybrid party that has incorporated big spending democrats!

Why is it that republicans in congress so quiet about this and not confronting Bush on this?

"GOP Congressman Says Bush No Reagan Conservative"

True, after the Beirut bombing and the death of the marines, Reagan, like Clinton in Mogadishu cut and run, Bush didn't, and does not.

Flame away.

Rohrbacher and company are too cowardly to actually cut spending.

He and the other House Republicans have the power of the purse, not Bush.

Bush is kind of like Fox News Channel. He's only conservative if you compare him against the alternative.

Bush no Reagan?

No $hit.

But given the alternatives in the last two elections, he got my vote. I do mean that by the way, if there was an actual CONSERVATIVE in the race in 2000 or 2004, that person would have gotten my vote. Not Mr. Open Borders and LETS SPEND LIKE DRUNKEN LIBERALS!

"Compassionate conservative" means cut taxes (conservative) and spend spend spend spend spend ("compassionate").

I give Newt and Kasich much of the blame. By switching the focus from economic growth to balancing the budget, they wiped out the positive Morning in America theme, and replaced it with budget cutting, not an inspirational image for most Americans.

If GW had run as a budget cutting accountant, he would have lost. "Compassionate" conservatism was phony, but it got him elected and he has managed some nice tax cuts.
