FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 23
2005
Five years after the controversial 2000 presidential election, ex-President Jimmy Carter now says he's certain Al Gore defeated George W. Bush.
"Well I would say that in the year 2000, the country failed abysmally in the presidential election process," Carter told a panel Monday at American University in Washington, D.C. "There's no doubt in my mind that Al Gore was elected president."
Those in attendance broke out in applause for that statement.
"[Gore] received the most votes nationwide, and in my opinion, he also received the most votes in Florida," Carter continued. "And the decision was made as you know on a 5-4 vote on a highly partisan basis by the U.S. Supreme Court, so I would say in 2000, there was a failure."
The year 2000 saw the closest presidential election in American history, as Bush won the electoral vote 271-266, despite losing the popular vote to Gore by a half-million votes.
Carter's analysis went on to include last year's matchup between Bush and Democrat Sen. John Kerry, as the election came down to a battle over the electoral votes in Ohio.
"The year 2004 is hard to grade," said Carter. "I don't have any detailed information about what actually went on in Ohio. If Ohio had gone one way or the other, it would have changed the outcome of the election. And the only thing that I know about Ohio, was that there's general consensus that the secretary of state of Ohio, who is responsible for the administration of the election, was highly partisan in his public approach and perhaps even in his private adminstration. But I don't know about that."
Carter's remarks are sparking discussion on messageboards across the Internet, with comments including:

Sounds like Carter is still punchy from the pummeling Reagan gave him in '80. The electorate pronounced their verdict on the Carter presidency in that contest. He didn't have the confidence of the people then and I don't think that has changed. Why should we listen to someone who has been so overwhelmingly repudiated?
No doubt he came to this conclusion after a long discussion with Amy!
What is it with these RAT dems that think they have created 'genius' children....who are very hard on the eyes... to boot!! (I refrained from using ugly).
Dirt?
Definitely Bill Sammon's book "At Any Cost"...
"'Recession' is when your neighbor loses his job. 'Depression' is when you lose yours. 'Recovery' is when Jimmy Carter loses his."
---Ronald Reagan, at 1980 presidential debate.
He never lost it...though Bubba/Hellary come close.
Jimmy Carter slept while Iranian thugs held American hostages 25 years ago. Apparently he was sleeping again when Bush beat Gore in 2000. Remember Bush carried Fl. even though the Dems did their best to steal the election.

That's an out-and-out lie. It was 7-2. There were two decisions (end the recount and set uniform standards for yet another) that day and the one he is talking about (ending the recount) was decided 7-2. The left keeps trotting out this 5-4 vote total incorrectly.
Rosalyn, Rosalyn, your ward got loose again.
The thing is the latter is not a matter of opinion (and neither is the former for that matter).
This was also posted in Worldnetdaily, not actually a liberal website.
"There's no doubt in my mind that Al Gore was elected president."
I would trust the SCOTUS oligarchy WAY BEFORE I would trust the mind of Jimmy Carter. Who cares what his opinion is?
It is fabulous how the SCOTUS has been hailed as the saviour of the republic by liberal socialist democrats, UNTIL it cuts the wrong way. Now it becomes a "partisan" SCOTUS.
Double edged swords cut both ways Mr. Carter. Since you study the Bible, that should be an easy reference to understand.
First Ex-Prez Clinton and now Ex-Prez Carter are insulting President Bush.
Not only is that type of disrespect a big NO NO coming from former presidents, but it plainly shows just how little class those two punks have.
Opinions don't count, numbers do. Electoral college matters, more than popular vote. You can't change the rules mid-stream just because you don't like the score.
If Gore had lost the popular vote but won the Electoral Votes, the RATS would be beating their fists on the Constitution and the Electoral Vote process, and saying the Republicans have no reason to gripe.
Billy always was the brains in the family.
Way to go with the good data!!!!!!
No.
There was a monograph publication sponsored by a Colorado Utility called "The Coercive Utopians" that clearly spelled out in detail how Carter blocked so much American development of natural resources...you would know that he KNEW what the world he was doing...at least on behalf of the liberal handlers.
He was the worst (most dispicable), next to FDR, and he knew it.
However, had Gore won, then the election process would have been just as the Founding Fathers had envisioned. What a retard.
