FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 23
2005
Five years after the controversial 2000 presidential election, ex-President Jimmy Carter now says he's certain Al Gore defeated George W. Bush.
"Well I would say that in the year 2000, the country failed abysmally in the presidential election process," Carter told a panel Monday at American University in Washington, D.C. "There's no doubt in my mind that Al Gore was elected president."
Those in attendance broke out in applause for that statement.
"[Gore] received the most votes nationwide, and in my opinion, he also received the most votes in Florida," Carter continued. "And the decision was made as you know on a 5-4 vote on a highly partisan basis by the U.S. Supreme Court, so I would say in 2000, there was a failure."
The year 2000 saw the closest presidential election in American history, as Bush won the electoral vote 271-266, despite losing the popular vote to Gore by a half-million votes.
Carter's analysis went on to include last year's matchup between Bush and Democrat Sen. John Kerry, as the election came down to a battle over the electoral votes in Ohio.
"The year 2004 is hard to grade," said Carter. "I don't have any detailed information about what actually went on in Ohio. If Ohio had gone one way or the other, it would have changed the outcome of the election. And the only thing that I know about Ohio, was that there's general consensus that the secretary of state of Ohio, who is responsible for the administration of the election, was highly partisan in his public approach and perhaps even in his private adminstration. But I don't know about that."
Carter's remarks are sparking discussion on messageboards across the Internet, with comments including:

What are the odds of Carter having a seat, anywheres, at the 2008 Dem convention?
I am heading to work right now so real quick:
1 - The USSC did "vacate" the FSC decision to extend the deadline. It was a complete slap-down saying, in essence: we don't know how you got here. Then after the contests trial of Judge Sauls, the FSC reversed that decision, decided undervotes were to be tabulated not just in Gores chosen Demo counties but every county. All to be done in two days before the Dec. 12 federal deadline. The FSC didn't even address the vacating of their previous ruling and ignored essentially all the questions the USSC had in regards to the first decision.
But here is all you need to remember. There were two votes (dependent on the affirmative outcome of the first)- one to verify whether there had been equal protection violations and two whether there was time for a quick and accurate remedy. On the first the vote was 7-2 that there were equal protection violations. The much-quoted 5-4 decision is what finalized the victory for the president and rightfully so but the fact is it was truly a 7-2 decision that won the presidency for Bush.
As far as to a book - the best quick summary would be Bill Sammons "At Any Cost: How Al Gore Tried To Steal The Presidency"
All anyone has to do to shut this buffoon up; Ask him about how the KKK helped him get elected Governor of Ga.
That is known fact! Hell the history channel even did a show about it a few years ago.
Seems he forgot the rest of his Presidential failures!
Who really gives a flip what that bitter old fool thinks? So he spoke to a room full of academic elite airheads at American University. When it's all said and done, George W. Bush is in the White House, and Al Gore ain't.
And if Jimmah Cahtuh wants to talk about winning and losing, we can always discuss 1980.
He's stuck on malaise.
While Carter was the worst ever, Bush has only himself to blame over in the Middle East. He should of routed the terrorists out of Syria (and found the WMD's), He should of forced the Saudis and Kuwaitis into lower oil prices and he should of started some gas refineries.
Tell me, Dan. Does it require some type of surgery, or just very heavy doses of medication to come up with nonsense like that?
Jimmy who?
At best, Carter is an ass. At worst, a treasonous ass.

"Has there ever in the USA history been a worse President than Jimmy Carter?"
The "Worst President in History" title was formerly held by James Buchanan, whose bumbling lack of leadership in the late 1850's contributed in large part to the outbreak of the Civil War. Six months into his presidency Jimmy Carter had already taken the title for all time. Even Slick Willie at his very worst was better than Carter.
If, God forbid, we ever elect someone worse than Carter, we will be on the slippery slope to oblivion.
hanks for the summary. I'll look for the book.
