Running out of time

Fear meets frustration as Texans attempt to flee from Rita

Washington Post

Posted: Sept. 22, 2005

-snip-

Houston's mayor acknowledged that the pre-hurricane evacuation preparations, which some Texas officials had been boasting about earlier this week, had gone awry, in part, because too many people attempted to flee the city at once.

White said he had been imploring federal and state official since early Thursday to reverse traffic flow on the inbound lanes but that it had begun to occur only by mid-afternoon. "I would say there will be some learning experiences," he said.

-snip-

There also were long delays Thursday at George Bush International Airport for passengers trying to fly out of Houston. White said that large numbers of federal Transportation Security Administration workers had failed to show up for work at the airport on Thursday.

"Well there was serious traffic this afternoon before the lane reversal and shortly after - I saw interviews with people who had only moved a few miles in several hours. "

I remember years ago I would drive from NC to NJ every month and it would take 7 hours if I left late at night but in the day it would take 18-20 hours. The traffic backed at the tolls in VA would be backed up 30 miles and once you got through a toll and went a few miles it was traffic again for 30 miles to the next toll.

Bush should be impeached right this minute for not releasing to Texas and Louisiana the secret government "People Fax Machines" now sitting in Warehouses in Bethesda Maryland.

The Libs' Next Wizard Movie: How Bush was really a senile old man behind the curtain. gag>

No the National Enquirer is claiming Bush has started drinking alcohol after Katrina, anonymous source of course.

Next they'll claim he's beating his wife and dog.

Probably Carville, Begala, or Dean was their source, but of course we will NEVER know now will we? < sarcasm ON bigtime >

Why did it take so long to order the lane reversal? This is a decision for the local mayor and gov to make, not the Feds.

Indeedy!! And CNN just went through all that work and money getting the courts to let them take pictures of people's mother's and son's rotting corpses. Because of the public's right to know....

Those TSA workers should come back to find they have no jobs. They need to be FIRED. No pension either.

Well, I don't think I agree with that simply because the entire city was ordered evacuated. Wouldn't that include the TSA workers living there?

This reminds me of the great scene in "Raising Arizona."

The old guy is telling the hapless bank robbers, "If we freeze like you told us to do, how can we get down on the floor?"

The transporters are on the fritz because Bush cut the budget! ;)

The TSA workers ought to be considered "essential personnel" since their absence means the airport cannot be used to evacuate the area putting thousands in danger.

Not to mention, Scotty died a few months ago and Bush has not found a cousin and/or partisan hack named Scotty trained in the art of "Beaming Up" he can appoint to fill the vacancy.

Bush should have immediately ordered the inbound lanes turned around. IMMEDIATELY! He should have had some federal marshals come in and stop the inbound traffic, have them all do three-point turns and head out of the city. Again, do I really need a sarcasm tag?

That's funny.

I don't recall seeing any pictures of the incinerated Waco children or the butchered bodies of the Mogadishu soldiers.

Oh...wait...that was on Clinton's watch.

Never mind.

Some local spokesperson just said it was because of construction work.

I reckon parts of the road just weren't available.

Pffft.

If Karl Rove has weather-changing scalar technology at his disposal, he no doubt has a transporter, too.

He could just fire up HAARP and teleport them all out of danger.

Fat lotta good Calypso Louie's "mother ship" is.
If he really cared, he'd just beam them aboard that and skip the whole traffic jam ordeal.

[ouch...these tinfoil hats really chafe]....:)

I just saw a live shot of the Highways and there is NO TRAFFIC JAMS right now

Hmmmm .. could it be because Texas started preparing for the storm 5 days in advance instead of the day before it hits???

If you have XM, listen to the Houston traffic-weather channel, XM 226.

Gas trucks out delivering gas. I-10 west in decent shape. All tolls waived on toll roads. Some jams (didn't catch where), but overall I got the impression traffic is moving reasonably well.
