Addressing a California ballot initiative, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he would "kill" anyone who took one of his daughters to have an abortion without notifying him.
"I have a daughter," Schwarzenegger said in an interview with the Sacramento Bee. "I wouldn't want to have someone take my daughter to a hospital for an abortion or something and not tell me. I would kill him if they do that."
The Republican governor, who has two teenage daughters and two preteen sons, was responding Tuesday to Proposition 73, an initiative that would make most abortions for minors illegal without prior notification of the girls' parents or guardians.
Schwarzenegger, a supporter of abortion rights, clarified that he did not literally mean he would kill someone, but he left no doubt as to how strongly he feels about the issue.
"It will be the ultimate of being outraged about it and angry about it," he told the Sacramento paper.
"They call me when my daughter falls off the jungle gym in the school and they say, 'What do you want us to use? Can we put a Band-Aid on it? Do you want to come in? She's crying a little bit.'
"They call us about everything. I don't want them in that particular incident not to call us."
If one of his daughters sought an abortion on her own, he said, "then I would deal with that also."
Specifically, the initiative would make an abortion provider subject to civil penalties for performing an abortion on a minor without notification of a parent at least 48 hours in advance.
A pregnant girl, however, would have the right to petition a juvenile court judge to waive the notification requirement.
Schwarzenegger said he's not sure whether he'll endorse the measure on the special election ballot Nov. 8, explaining he already is pushing four initiatives and may not want to divert attention from those.
Backers of the parental notification measure argue that the measure would protect a fundamental parental right.
"In California, a young girl under the age of 18 can't get a flu shot or an aspirin from the school nurse without a parent being notified," Paul Laubacher, a Sacramento nurse and the official ballot proponent of the Proposition 73 initiative, told the Bee. "But a doctor can perform an abortion without notifying a parent or guardian."
Opponents argue it could further endanger young girls who are victims of sexual abuse or family violence. The requirement to seek a judge, they say, would traumatize already confused and frightened girls.
Don't most propositions in California get overruled by the courts? Just my perception.
Ping!
Of course, any journey always omits the first step, right? :-)
Don't mean to "pile on," friend. We appreciate all our Aussie mates. Just disagree in this instance.
looky looky
Good post.
The world needs more fathers like that!
Nope. Arnold is still pro-choice, pro-abortion on demand, pro-death ......
I'm sick of hearing about all the poor pregnant girls who are fearful of telling their abusive parents the bad news. This from Planned Parenthood who has been PROVEN to provide abortions to under-age girls KNOWING the father of the child was an adult, but never reporting the crime of abuse, incest, etc. As always, the leftists are hypocrites from hell.
Bump
I knew I could depend on a "Reagan man" to see what I'm getting at...
Who pays for a kids abortion without parental notification?
>>>Opponents argue it could further endanger young girls who are victims of sexual abuse or family violence. The requirement to seek a judge, they say, would traumatize already confused and frightened girls.>>>
So they are saying that a perpetrator of sexual abuse would WANT the teen to birth the evidence that they are being abused? That argument makes absolutely no sense. It would seem that the perpetrator of the abuse would want the evidence flushed down the figurative toilet.
I think this fall under the "Let me fish an argument out of my a&& to seem like I give a damn about these girls so I can push my abortion without restrictions agenda." catagory.
Where did he state your interpretation?
When I was a senior in high school, three girls in just one of my classes (home ec...go figure) had abortions and then came back to school and bragged about it. Not a single one of them was a victim of sexual abuse or family violence, but rather they were all victims of their own stupidity.
The Great Ronald Reagan & John Paul II - Heaven's Dream Team!
>>>Even if the parent DID think it was okay their daughter got an abortion, wouldn't THEY want to check out the doctor and go with them?>>>
Or know that that day their daughter had an abortion so they could monitor them like they would under ANY surgical procedure!!! I do not understand how abortion docs and pro-choicers do not see a problem here. If a girl has an abortion without her parents knowledge, she is not going to tell them if she starts bleeding heavily or has other problems so they won't find out about the abortion/sexual activity. So my teenage daughter could be dying and I not even know until it is too late to keep an eye on her. (Not that I would allow it to happen anyway) It's just not healthy. When will these morons realize the pro-choicers could care less about ANYONE. Let alone the ones they claim to want to 'protect'.
Where did he say that?
Has Arnold clearly stated a position supporting abortion on demand?
I lived in cali for 13 yrs until Jun '04 and I honestly do not recall his stated position on this subject.
The Bizzaro Universe.
The logic goes as follows:
Arnie supports a woman's "right" to kill her child. Given his daughter is presumably a young woman, he recognises her "right" to kill her child.
Now, he says he just wants to know about it first.
I'm not knocking him for supporting parental notification laws, just trying to calm the "Arnie for President" push with a reminder he supports killing babies.
