Addressing a California ballot initiative, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he would "kill" anyone who took one of his daughters to have an abortion without notifying him.
"I have a daughter," Schwarzenegger said in an interview with the Sacramento Bee. "I wouldn't want to have someone take my daughter to a hospital for an abortion or something and not tell me. I would kill him if they do that."
The Republican governor, who has two teenage daughters and two preteen sons, was responding Tuesday to Proposition 73, an initiative that would make most abortions for minors illegal without prior notification of the girls' parents or guardians.
Schwarzenegger, a supporter of abortion rights, clarified that he did not literally mean he would kill someone, but he left no doubt as to how strongly he feels about the issue.
"It will be the ultimate of being outraged about it and angry about it," he told the Sacramento paper.
"They call me when my daughter falls off the jungle gym in the school and they say, 'What do you want us to use? Can we put a Band-Aid on it? Do you want to come in? She's crying a little bit.'
"They call us about everything. I don't want them in that particular incident not to call us."
If one of his daughters sought an abortion on her own, he said, "then I would deal with that also."
Specifically, the initiative would make an abortion provider subject to civil penalties for performing an abortion on a minor without notification of a parent at least 48 hours in advance.
A pregnant girl, however, would have the right to petition a juvenile court judge to waive the notification requirement.
Schwarzenegger said he's not sure whether he'll endorse the measure on the special election ballot Nov. 8, explaining he already is pushing four initiatives and may not want to divert attention from those.
Backers of the parental notification measure argue that the measure would protect a fundamental parental right.
"In California, a young girl under the age of 18 can't get a flu shot or an aspirin from the school nurse without a parent being notified," Paul Laubacher, a Sacramento nurse and the official ballot proponent of the Proposition 73 initiative, told the Bee. "But a doctor can perform an abortion without notifying a parent or guardian."
Opponents argue it could further endanger young girls who are victims of sexual abuse or family violence. The requirement to seek a judge, they say, would traumatize already confused and frightened girls.
Really? Then reconcile these facts:
1) Arnold favors parental notification when children seek abortions without their parents' knowledge.
2) Arnold supports legalized abortion.
1) Arnold favors parental notification when children seek abortions without their parents' knowledge.
2) Arnold supports legalized abortion.
No reconciliation is necessary.
The issue was simple. Minor female children shouldn't have access to abortions without parents knowing about it and thus having a chance to deal with it. Period.
Why do you think his beliefs about whether or not adult females should have abortions is relevant?
Arnold just lost the election. Right now. It's all over for the Governator. He stuck his foot in his mouth and caught fatal 'hoof and mouth disease.'
You're right. This is one law that the vast majority of the country endorses. The only opponents are hardcore feminazis. And that is because they don't think children belong to a family. I've had people who were rabidly pro-abort tell me they would support a parental notification, so long as the potential law had a judicial bypass option.
Because it's idiotic for him to oppose notification if he doesn't think there's anything intrinsically wrong with abortion.
If he favors parental notification simply because he believes abortion to be a surgical procedure, then he's either ignorant of the fundamental nature of abortion or he's a moral leper.
I have a daughter," Schwarzenegger said in an interview with the Sacramento Bee. "I wouldn't want to have someone take my daughter to a hospital for an abortion or something and not tell me. I would kill him if they do that."
He may be ignorant of the fundamental nature of abortion.
But his virtue has the virtue of championing the conservative side of two issues: parental rights and abortion.
We should take what we can get till we can get more.

California Family Council website:
In 1987 the California Legislature passed legislation requiring parental consent before a young girl had an abortion. After a lengthy court battle, the measure was found to be unconstitutional in 1997. As a result of that ruling, based on the right to privacy, a minor can now receive abortion services, including payment by Medi-Cal, without parental consent or notification, to the same extent that adults can.

Some party insiders predicted Schwarzenegger would generate even more fervor among activists by endorsing Proposition 73, the initiative requiring parental consent for teens to obtain an abortion."That is one of our secret weapons," California Republican Party Chairman Duf Sundheim said. "People feel very passionately about that."
Sundheim and others said the initiative will increase voter turnout among abortion rights foes, who would be likely to support the measures the governor has endorsed.
For both sides, turnout is the key to victory in an off-election year. There are no candidates on the ballot to get voters excited.
Supports current family planning programs
I support a woman's right to choose. I support the state's current family planning programs, and as governor, would make no changes to this policy.Opposes partial birth abortion

I do not support partial birth abortion. I am in favor of parental notification, but I believe there must be a mechanism available where an individual can seek counsel from an outside entity, perhaps the courts.Supports parental notification, with limits

The GOP candidate said in a radio interview that he is pro-choice but does not support what critics call "partial-birth" abortions, and said he agrees with parental notification for underage girls seeking abortions, unless there is abuse or other problems in the girl's family.

Thank you for the info. I had a feeling we had "been there, done that."
