Late this morning, Houston authorities were advising motorists stuck in the gridlocked evacuation with less than an eight of a tank left to pull off instead of risking the possibility they might run out and block traffic.
Stop at any gas station that is open and fill up, they advised.
New twist: Some gas stations in the already evacuated cities south of Houston were open. Some folks were filling up cans and containers there, with plans to head north and provide it to those in need.
Everyone needs to get out. Everyone needs to help, explained Sy Lindsay, a Bacliff retiree who was filling six cans of gasoline in the back of his pickup at a South Houston Texaco station off Telephone Road.
Were all in this together.
Amid the traffic in Houston, SUVs with gas cans strapped onto their top were spotted, as well.
Round of applause for Sy and all the Samaritans like him.
Looters are an endangered yet unprotected species in Texas. The problem with shooting someone and attempting to loot is that the perpetrator will probably be ventilated by nearby citizens within seconds.
Forgot to tell you - since we're getting a hurricane this year, all the tornadoes are coming to visit you. And you're at the top of the list to receive the next rogue hurricane.
:-D
I'll make sure to chain down Toto. ;)
"And while we're at it, do you mind if I look in your trunk?"
After Katrina I bought 55 gallons of gasoline in case of a shortage (55g lasts me a month). Well we had no shortage but I never had to pay $3.5 for a gallon either. I'll be stocking up again tonight to avoid the price spike. My prayers are with those folks and God bless.
Just wait til the ACLU gets involved.
Governor Perry needs to get the NG out there with some extra gas cans. Enough to get people to the next exit with a gas station that has gas.
I have been wanting to move to Texas for a few years now. This nudges me a little bit closer.
I was born and raised here. Get here as fast as you can! Unless you're a liberal!

Yeah, now if can only get the oil companies to help out too we might all just make it this year. But I doubt they will kick in anything to help, greedy bastards. Washington is pressuring them now but it is a little too little and a little too late. Also, start gearing up for massive recession in Q1 & Q2 of 2006 people. Let's be prepared to help each other out when that time comes, we're going to need to. The effects of Katrina have not even been felt on the economy and the economy was already on shaky ground because of high energy in the first place.
On a note, for vehicles manufactured since 1984 most are fuel injected and thus have an electric fuel pump. Running out of gas burns the pump up and you are stuck where she dies.
Conservative all the way. My dad is conservative, I'm more conservative, and my son is trying to be more conservative than me.
HA! Keep the hurricanes and nasty winters, I'll settle for west coast weather and avoid it all. Even with quakes now and then, we feel VERY fortunate.
Good luck to all those in this things path.
I was looking at Google Map of the houston area, and it seems that people would be better off using the numerous secondary roads to head west for 20-40 miles, then head north. There are a LOT more lanes of secondary roads, when you add them up, than there are highway lanes
If there is at least one healthy male in a vehicle and the whole highway is crawling, I'd be out pushing the car to save gas rather than burn it off and being stuck if it's moving at only 1 MPH. Then when the traffic gets faster, get back in and use the gas.
Ever tried pushing a car for just one mile? I did in my younger days with help too. Even the slightest uphill grade at all and one mile seems like 50.
Better than running out of gas IMO. I would do that where I could though if I were these people evacuating.
the Governor is sending tanker trucks as gas cans for filling stations and positioning them along the evacuation route. The world changed and great ideas are become the currency of each disaster.
