Bush: Weak terror response led to 9/11

Sep 22, 2005, 19:00 GMT

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- President Bush said withdrawing from Iraq would be a mistake that would embolden terrorists just as U.S. responses to other attacks led to 9/11 hijackings.

Speaking Thursday at the Pentagon after an update on the war on terror, Bush said a pullback would be seen as weakness and make the United States less safe.

'The terrorists saw our response to the hostage crisis in Iran, the bombings in the Marine barracks in Lebanon, the first World Trade Center attack, the killing of American soldiers in Somalia, the destruction of two U.S. embassies in Africa and the attack on the USS Cole,' Bush said. 'The terrorists concluded that we lacked the courage and character to defend ourselves and so they attacked us.'

It was the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, carried out by al-Qaida operatives, that led Bush to launch the war on terror with an attack on Afghanistan, where al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden had been given sanctuary. Bush links the fighting in Iraq with the war on terror.

The president said the plan is to follow a strategy of making political gains in the affected counties, while training local personnel to assume security operations.

The president should come out and challenge the american people, who have been beaten down by the lamestream media and the dems and ask them, "American citizens, are we weak? are we afraid? are we cowards?" NO!!! Then stand with me and let's re-dedicate ourselves to winning this war on terror!!! Support the troops and support their mission!!

Just a thought.

Nice, maybe Bush will have a moment of clarity on illegal immigration, too. Just throwing your hands up and legalizing them is not a plan, it's capitulation, Mr. President!

Re: "What a stupid comment."

What can you expect from one with "Hophead" for a moniker.

"However, I'll remain on the side of helping someone when they are down because I can lay my head on the pillow at night knowing I did the right thing. That's me."

You missed the point completely. It's not what you would or would not do. It is about what government is allowed to do or not do.

"I'm so glad he stood up for himself. Very refreshing!"

A rather nuanced "standing up" for himself I'd say...IF it wasn't said inadvertently (which is what I believe to be the case.)

"Better late than never"?!

Bush has been pointing out this truth SINCE 9/11 - see links above.

It's called "diplomacy" and the art of politics. But, leaving that aside, you honestly believe the President of the United States has REPEATEDLY, USING THE SAME EXACT WORDS, been "inadvertent"?

I should have clarified my post a bit more.

I believe it was "inadvertent" that Dubya would criticize Bubba Clinton in any way shape or form.

I assume Dubya's already been on the phone with Clinton, apologizing profusely.

Excellent rant. So it was 26 years of problems that were supposed to be solved in 8 months. What a slaker that Bush fella is!

Maybe he finally got fed up with Bubba bad-mouthing him - after all he and his father have done to try to restore Clinton's reputation. It shows a lack of "loyalty" - one of the characteristics the Bush family prises the most.

I believe you are mistaken - did you not see Bush41 take Clinton to task (politely) for his criticism of the current POTUS? There are plenty more examples of this Administration finally realizing that terrorists learned the wrong lesson from Beruit to the USS Cole. Here's another quote: "This violence is directed not only against our coalition, but against anyone in Iraq who stands for decency, and freedom and progress. There is more at work in these attacks than blind rage. The terrorists have a strategic goal. They want us to leave Iraq before our work is done. They want to shake the will of the civilized world. In the past, the terrorists have cited the examples of Beirut and Somalia, claiming that if you inflict harm on Americans, we will run from a challenge. In this, they are mistaken. Two years ago, I told the Congress and the country that the war on terror would be a lengthy war, a different kind of war, fought on many fronts in many places. Iraq is now the central front. Enemies of freedom are making a desperate stand there -- and there they must be defeated. This will take time and require sacrifice. Yet we will do what is necessary, we will spend what is necessary, to achieve this essential victory in the war on terror, to promote freedom and to make our own nation more secure." It's way past time Bush stood up to the reporters and said "oh, by the way, Clinton had 8 years to do something, anything, and when he got the information, he had it destroyed - see Able Danger". Meanwhile, Bush endured a relentless Gore's attempt to steal the election, sending 100s of lawyers to dissenfranchise our military votes in FL, Clinton kept Bush from fielding a staff for the new admin. Then, the disgusted X42 raids and robbs the WH which again delays things, the senate drags their fat fee on confirmation hearings for AG John Ashcroft, oh and let's never forget the 20 days of April, 2001 where China held our airmen and women hostage and Bush got them all home SAFE and SOUND without starting a WAR on CHINA! Oh, but somehow, while democrats claim Bush to be stupid and ignorant, yet when it comes to national security and AL-Quaida, he's supposed to be ALL-Knowing and on top of the whole thing so as to get all the blame when 9/11 commission blasts him for not doing enough to prevent the terrorists!

OK, I'm done ranting (for now)...

To be fair, until Sunday's chat with Russert, Clinton had not personally taken a big swipe at GWB. I think the President has been doing just fine, public polling be damned.

I was against the 9/11 Commission from the start, especially one with Gorelick on it.
