The smart people leave at 3am.
Not in this case. My brother left at about that time this morning and got 10 miles in 2 1/2 hours and turned around. He told me there were people who ran out of gas. He said it was a nightmare.
A lady just said she left at 4:00 a.m. yesterday from Galveston and just arrived in North Houston (where I live).
Another guy said they went 4 miles on 290 in 4 hours and had to pull over.
Friends of ours left at 11 PM last night and it still took them 13 hours for what is normally 4-5 hours.
Both sides of the Interstates not being used for evacuation?
Who is coming INTO these places from the north? or east? Or west?
How about parallel roadways - are they being used?
Some left early last night and are still stuck in taffic.
my uncle left houston at 3:30am, 7 hours to go 20 miles.
Smart people take the regular city streets all of the way out to back roads that lead out of town.
Dumb people take the main arteries and freeways.
I call it the Lemming syndrome. They just have to follow the ones in front of them no matter how slow it gets.
I watched this in hurricane Allen and was simply amazed that the evacuation from Corpus Christi was an eight to twelve hour ordeal when all they had to do is head west on a standard two lane highway, a few farm roads and "Viola!" they would be in San Antonio in about two hours.
People need to think for themselves...not let the government think for you.
Yes, having large percentages of people heed the voluntary evac call is good, sure, but to not couple it with a contra flow plan---and TXDOT DID NOT HAVE ONE IN PLACE, accoring to Mayor White---was unconscionable.
I know: I spent 8 hours heading east, got only about 110 miles, gave up and headed back.
Pathetic, insane, ridiculous. How the hell do you expect a city of nearly 3 million to evac in 48-72 hours w/o contraflow? Hell, even New Orleans got that part right.
There was a lady on the radio who left Santa Fe, Texas, at 3 a.m. this morning. Right now, she's running out of gas in Bastrop.
The smart people learn to travel on the many Farm To Market roads and avoid the freeways.
The smarter people checked things out before buying and are sitting at home all cozy in a house or apartment that is in no danger of flooding and little danger of wind damage.
