Read further. Links to both the Army and the Navy Times verify the story.

" The cash offered has to be less than the service they are forgoing, or there would be no cost savings."
In any system where someone else pays for the benefits there is a lot of unnecessary waste.
When people don't have any form of copay some will go the the emergency room for minor things. If they have to pay a copay, they go to urgent care, or make a doctor's appointment if it's not urgent.
If people have to pay a copay for prescription drugs, they often find that a cheaper, over the counter, medication suits their needs.
Even relatively small copay have been proven to make benefits plans much more affordable.

NO TO MILITARY BENEFITS CUTS!
Cut ALL welfare state programs. Cut NEA funding. Cut NPR funding. Do not fund any new, pseudo-moon missions. Make Congress subject to Social Security and eliminate Congressional pensions that pay them more than when they served. Cut all agricultural subsidies - these all go to Conagra, Tyson and the like.

Yes, yes I trust the vets. I don't truast a politician who is apparently looking to "trim the fat" on he backs of the military, when illegal aliens are still getting benefits they didn't earn. I wonder how much could be saved by cutting them of entirely and leaving the military and the vets (me included) alone.

So is this the same thing -- and why is he calling himself the "leader" of the "House Conservatives?" Pence does a fine job of leading up the Republican Study Committee which is the conservative wing of the House. Who do you feel would be a better candidate for that title?

Is this the same Mike Pence that some on this web site have been trying to draft to run for POTUS? Well he doesn't get my support after this. Please look at the proposal closely. This is completely VOLUNTARY. Any soldier who does not wish to change his health care will not have to.

Understood, however if not enough servicemembers go for it, where are the savings?

1. Slash the gold-plated medical and retirement system for legislators and senior executive executive branch appointees. 2 Eliminate all legislative and executive branch travel expenses. If they really have to go on this fact-finding boondoggle, they can do it at their own expense. One return flight per year per legislator. 3. To this list add all resonable suggestions from other FReepers.

Right on.
It is a sacrilege to call these Marxists Republicans.
There is over $1 TRILLION dollars in FY 2006 budgeted for "Human Resources", a fancy name for welfare and various social wealth transfer programs.
There is ZERO need to cut NASA, ZERO need to cut military programs or anything other than other social welfare programs.
For any Republican to suggest that we cut any program other than programs involved in social welfare is stating clearly they are as much RAT-like as typical RATs.
Do not allow your Republican officials to act like RATs. Take the money form other social programs! There is over $1 TRILLION to play with.
