I just found an old barometer my Grandpa' gave me years ago.

Currently reading 984 mb. I do believe I'll keep an eye on that thing.

I think she's sloughing off that parasitical inner eye. Once that inner eye dies (eye has to be larger than 24NM), and she retains here annular form, she'll be officially recognized as being an annular hurricane. Once she's fully annular, she won't be giving up ANYTHING for at least 12 hours (provided she can hold it for three hours to begin with). She could set a record with respect to longest period of annular form, and make landfall just as she is right now.

What kind of impression she could make when she shows up? Well, you start with low tide, add to that 1' per 1" HG depression from standard pressure. She's at 915mb. That's approximately 2.9' for surge dome (if she deepens that would change). Add on top of that wind wave (NOGAP forecast about 38'), and then add to that slope wave. This is entirely determinant upon sea bottom topography. I have no idea what kind of surf is available off of the coast of Houston. If surfing is good, then add whatever seems like a good number. That's what would come in at low tide when Rita makes landfall. Make adjustment for any other tide as appropriate.

Correct. Rural areas that don't have natural gas pipelines available have big tanks of propane next to the house for water heater, furnace and gas range in my part of the country.

Local CBS station here in MN saying authorities in TX telling people that if you have children, and they are injured in the storm, they may be charged with child endangerment (for not evacuating).

Some people stuck on freeways for 14 hours so far.

Sorry if this has been posted already.

A man on TV just said that Houston was never told to get out of town. I think it was that judge. I was in the kitchen halfway listening to him. He said that is what caused all the problems.

Can you calibrate the barometer? I have a nasty habit of breaking barometers when I try to calibrate them. Have killed two already.

"Local CBS station here in MN saying authorities in TX telling people that if you have children, and they are injured in the storm, they may be charged with child endangerment (for not evacuating). "

Nope. No such thing being said here in Texas. Your MN station is making it up.

I'm thinking that people might be better off trying the secondary roads. From the map, there's a whole bunch that head west. Once you are 20-30 miles west, you can try heading north, and it will probably get you to where you need to go faster than I-45. The some total of available lanes on secondary roads is much more than the number of interstate lanes. You might also have a better chance of finding a gas station that still has gas.
