Russia threw Iran a diplomatic lifeline yesterday by publicly defending it against the West’s demands that it be held accountable for its nuclear programme. After two days of heated debate among the 35 members of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, the Kremlin said that it was prepared to block moves by the European Union to have Iran referred to the UN Security Council for possible punitive action. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs insisted that the issue could be resolved through diplomatic means.
Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, said: “While Iran is co-operating with the IAEA, while it is not enriching uranium and observing a moratorium, while IAEA inspectors are working in the country, it would be counter-productive to report this question to the UN Security Council. It will lead to an unnecessary politicising of the situation.”
Moscow’s position matters. It has not only the support of a dozen IAEA members, but a Security Council veto to block any attempt to impose economic sanctions on Iran. It appeared only to harden resolve in the EU, which failed to clinch a deal with Iran in two years of tortuous diplomacy.
On Tuesday the EU circulated a draft resolution condemning Iran’s “failures and breaches”. Peter Jenkins, the British representative to the IAEA, toughened the language against the country yesterday in a statement which said that the EU was “deeply concerned by the fact that Iran gives every sign of being intent on developing a fissile material production capability well before the international community obtains what it needs: confidence that Iran’s programme is exclusively peaceful.”
The US called on the IAEA to report Iran to the Security Council. The issue may come to a head today when the IAEA could be split if compelled to vote on the EU resolution. Some members want a vote suspended. The US is pressing for a vote which it is confident will be passed with a convincing majority. Others propose shelving the document until the issue can be debated at a future IAEA meeting. Ali Aghan Mohammadi, spokesman for Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said that the EU ’s hardened position meant that there was “very little future” in a negotiated agreement.

True enough. Putin must still be sore over loosing Saddam, I can't imagine he is going to let go of Iran that easily. He is going to need/demand something to replace his investment.

The nucelar stand off is why Russia built the reactors for the Jihadi in the first place. The cold war never went away, it went underground.
But we got rid of our bases, fleets and downsized our army and airforce anyway.
That will cost us our freedom. But hey, we got welfare and medicaid! Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we shall die makes for a lousy political plan. But at least lot of athiest politicians got real fat tapping the gravy train.

How is Israel supposed to survive after Iran gets nukes? How many U.S. cities will be blown up when Iran gives a few to the many terrorist organizations they harbor and support with massive funding? How many other Islamic organizations and states will be awash in nuclear bombs, setting them off willy nilly against us? Can Civilization as we know it survive? I feel many grossly underestimate how serious this is.
This would be a terrible time and way for Russia to stab us in the back. I hope Russia thinks twice, I hope there is some different behind the scenes negotation than the face presented here.

Maybe some of you should take a look on the Free Republic forum. One of the faithful servants of Kremlin painting your nation as a bunch of neo-Nazis and commies by posting everyday few anti-Ukrainian articles. This is big conservative forum and there is no your compatriots there, so partly his propaganda may be effective.

A Pentagon report on weapons found in Iraq after the war revealed a staggering amount of armaments, almost all foreign-made. The report, first disclosed in a new book by one of this column's writers, Bill Gertz, reached this stark conclusion: "Foreign munitions were used against coalition forces during the war and continue to be a potential source of explosives for improvised explosive devices still being used to kill U.S. soldiers."
According to the report cited in "Treachery: How America's Friends and Foes are Secretly Arming Our Enemies," 24 nations supplied armaments to Saddam Hussein. The total amount was between 650,000 tons and 1 million tons. By contrast, the entire U.S. military arsenal is between 1.6 million and 1.8 million tons.
The big three arms suppliers were Russia (and the Soviet Union), China and France: Russia supplied 122 different types of arms and a total of nearly 13 million items; China had provided 19 different types of arms and almost 380,000 items; France had supplied 12 different armaments and more than 115,000 items.
The report was produced by the office of deputy undersecretary of defense for international technology security, John Shaw.
It found that Russia had violated U.N. sanctions on Iraq by selling Saddam Hussein Kornet-E antitank guided weapons. The report said that in March 2003, Kornet missiles, first developed in 1994, were fired at two U.S. Army M-1A1 Abrams tanks near Najaf, disabling them.
The report also stated that Syria purchased 500 to 1,000 Kornets from Ukraine "on behalf of Iraq"; the transfers took place in early 2003, the report said. The Ukrainians had bought the missiles from Russian manufacturers. The report concluded, "Possession of the Kornet-E violates U.N. Security Council Resolution 687," which barred arms sales to Iraq.
