BAGHDAD--There is no more important international issue today than the need to defeat the curse of terrorism. And as the first democratically elected president of Iraq, I have a responsibility to ensure that the world's youngest democracy survives the inherently difficult transition from totalitarianism to pluralism. A transformation of the Iraqi state and Iraqi society is impossible without a sustained commitment of soldiers from the United States and other democracies.

We may well lose this war with the Battle of the Gulf. That's the Gulf of Mexico. W has promised so much money to Katrina rebuilding and he cannot do less for Rita. The resistance to tax increases will crumble as all th Congressional Republicans who never did understand supply-side become tax raisers. The economy will tank and support for the war will tank with it. We cannot just quit and go home with no consequences. We will have lost the war. And Minneapolis or whatever city the Moslems hit next. When the have won this war China will see a tremendous opportunity to hurt its enemy, maybe knock the US out, by making sure the Moslems have the wherewithal to do what they desire to do.
