A weather guy was talking about Rita last night on Fox. She has nothing but "high octane fuel" ahead of her. The gulf water temperature is warmer than it was with Katrina. She could turn out to be the monster storm of the century. I pray we are wrong.

I was wrong about the "three" part. There were 4, not counting Katrina.

Andrew, Camille, Gilbert, and the Labor Day Hurricane.

anyone know the longest time period an atlantic hurricane kept cat 5 status?

Start your timer.

This one will have to be the worst ever because Bush is causing it and he's the worst ever, right?

I wonder who kept the records B4 1492 anyway?

Excuse me! We live in Jefferson Parish bordering New Orleans. Our pumping stations are not all functioning yet and we can't stand any more strain on our levee systems. Let it go the the Ucatan.

Remember (newshype notwithstanding) this is not a sentient being, it isn't "gathering strength" in the sense of willful behaviour, and it doesn't have targets.

No need to explain the obvious.

Is there a category 6?

If God were to pick up the Gulf of Mexico and drop it on Houston, that would be a Cat. 6.

Not sure where you're seeing it hitting N.O....

Look at the current Sat picture on the website this thread links to. The model looks to be tracking the eye father south then it is.

Artist/Band: Campbell Glen
Lyrics for Song: Galveston
Lyrics for Album: Very Best of Glen Campbell
Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin'
I still see her dark eyes glowin'
She was 21 when I left Galveston

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing
While I watch the cannons flashing
I clean my gun and dream of Galveston

I still see her standing by the water
Standing there lookin' out to sea
And is she waiting there for me?
On the beach where we used to run

Galveston, oh Galveston, I am so afraid of dying
Before I dry the tears she's crying
Before I watch your sea birds flying in the sun
At Galveston, at Galveston

Unbelievable. Was it higher earlier in the season? I seem to remember that 90 deg. figure from somewhere. Is this typical for the Gulf? I know the waters there are more shallow than the open ocean, but still, that's pretty steamy.

We were in Sanibel season before last, and the waters were so warm you went swimming to warm up. The air was like 85 deg. and the water something like 86, right offshore.

If you look at the end of the loop, it appears to tick north.

That's not good, no matter how you cut it.

the best place for this to hit is south of Corpus Christi - just not much there until you get to South Padre Island -
