I hope he is right, but I just do not believe it. Look at how warm the water is on the projected path.

The storm surge in Galveston Bay could be of epic proportions if this intensity and track holds up.

Look at the Satellite loop on the Accuweather link at the top of this thread. All the Freeper weather buffs are po-poing that idea that it might hit NO but it sure looks like it is tracking farther north then the Hurricane model shows it.

Hurricane Katrina's lowest recorded pressure was at 902, IIRC it got that low less than 18-24 hours before hitting LA/MS.Katrina was the 4th lowest recorded pressure in a hurricane in the Altanic Ocean Basin. With Hurricane Rita's pressure now at 920mb it needs to drop 18mb to tie 19mb to get more intense than Katrina.....PRAY FOR ALL THOSE WHO WILL BE AFFECTED BY THIS HURRICANE!!!!

Thank god I live in Colorado.

If you guys drive cars in Colorado, then you'll feel it too.

Texas has 26 oil refineries and MSNBC is reporting that all the platforms in the Gulf are being shut down and evacuated. There will be another spike in oil prices at the very least and possibly shortages and empty gas stations- all over the nation.

The real story to keep an eye on here is oil production, not just local flooding and storm damage.

That storm was so very unusual. My spouse flew over the affected area 2 day later. He said there were steel I beams puncturing trees. As a mechanical contractor these items must have flown over 200 MPH for this to occur. Phenomenal!

Thanks, I was referring to Atlantic hurricanes. I'm quite sure the storms at certain times of the year over the deep Pacific churn up much worse scenarios. But this one may have the time if it continues its slow movement WNW to grow to record proportions.

Oh man, look at the track. Could be bye bye for NO.

At this point, it would be better if Rita did hit New Orleans. Well, not better for New Orleans, but better for the country. Any extra damage to the New Orleans area would pale in comparison to Cat-5 damage to another city/region of the country.

But it looks highly unlikely that it will hit New Orleans. Batten down and evacuate, Galveston!

That's a Jimmy Webb tune, no? One of America's greatest composers of the 20th century... and one who is relatively unknown.
