This image was taken by Clementine as it came over the north lunar pole at the completion of mapping orbit 102 on March 13, 1994. The angular separation between lunar horizon and Earth has been reduced for illustration purposes. The large crater at the bottom of the image is Plaskett (180 W longitude, 82 N latitude). (A version of this image with just the Earth in the image is available on the NSSDC Photo Gallery: Earth page.)

"Our parents and grandparents took us to the Moon the first time. Now it's time for us to go back to the Moon to stay, and then head straight for Mars."

It was the greatest thrill of my life, as a young engineer, to work on build parts of the Apollo system. It was a tragedy to see that program stopped -- for stupid, political reasons...no there is hope to move that technology forward, to the next step!

GO NASA !!!! Back to the moon!!

Until we conquer the Earth's gravity well, we're never going to get anywhere. We can't surface launch the class of ship required to safely provide interplanetary travel - it must be constructed in orbit. Put the $100B plus into developing and constructing the first space elevator after which it will be easier to construct more, and then you'll have something. Reliving the 50's and 60's of "space travel" (bah!) in the first decades of the 21st Century is pointless.

And until we conquer our own planet and harness its energy, we'll never conquer our nearby star and planetary system and harness its energy. Until then, we'll remain a measly Type-0 civilization capable of only a few rare slingshot type attempts at nearby orbs.

Do we get to pick the ones that go to the moon?

"The arching sky is calling
Spacemen back to their trade.
ALL HANDS! STAND BY! FREE FALLING!
And the lights below us fade.

Out ride the sons of Terra,
Far drives the thundering jet,
Up leaps a race of Earthmen,
Out, far, and onward yet"

From the poem "The Green Hills of Earth"
-Robert A. Heinlein

Xer Ping

Ping list for the discussion of the politics and social (and sometimes nostalgic) aspects that directly effects Generation Reagan / Generation-X (Those born from 1965-1981) including all the spending previous generations (i.e. The Baby Boomers) are doing that Gen-X and Y will end up paying for.

I want to be the first historian on the Moon. Seriously, it would be a good idea to have a few non-scientists on the trip and in the proposed moonbase.

Generation X-plorers are chomping at the bit to test themselves against the challenge of their lives.

Generation X-plorers don't have a clue about what it takes to get into space.

In past generations not knowing that something is impossible was a virtue - they had the basic math and science skills to figure it out as they go.

Generation X-plorers not only don't know what they don't know, they don't even know what they think they know. In manned spaceflight that kind of arrogance can be fatal.
