'Black Tuesday' Continues: 'NYT' Cutting 500 Jobs

By E&P Staff

Published: September 20, 2005 4:37 PM ET

NEW YORK The New York Times Company announced a staggering staff reduction plan Tuesday that will likely mean some 500 job loses at the company's many properties, including an expected 45 newsroom positions at The New York Times newspaper and 35 at The Boston Globe.

In a press release distributed Tuesday afternoon, the company said it "plans to begin the staff reductions in October and implement them over the course of the next six to nine months.

The news followed an announcement earlier in the day from Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., owner of the Philadelphia Daily News and the Philadelphia Inquirer, would seek to cut 100 jobs through buyouts.

The New York Times Company added that about 250 positions at The New York Times Media Group will be affected, including approximately 45 newsroom positions at The Times newspaper. At The New England Media Group, some 160 positions, including those at the Globe, will be lost. The Company's regional newspapers, broadcast outlets, and corporate staff will also be affected, the release said, but did not offer specifics.

"This represents a continuation of the initiatives the Company began earlier this year to find ways to operate more efficiently," a statement with the release said. "As a result of these efforts, the Company identified areas where it could function effectively with fewer people. Earlier this year the Company reduced its staff by approximately 200 positions, or about 2%.

The Company also stated it "plans to manage the staff reductions in such a way that it continues to provide journalism of the highest quality, to function smoothly on a day-to-day basis and to achieve its long-term strategic goals."

This is terrific news - - very encouraging!!

The New York Times' knee-jerk support of the Democrat Party and its goal of bringing Euro-style secular socialism to the United States while belittling traditional America and the traditional American family unit has finally started to catch up with that paper.

The damage that the New York Times did to this nation during the decades when liberal "mainstream" newsrooms monopolized the selection, spin and dissemination of the news of the day cannot be overstated. I want that paper and all the rest like it to crawl away and die for the good of the country and for the good of my family.

I just want them all to hurry up and die.

"I just want them all to hurry up and die."

Don't discount a death of the slow, lingering kind. Might be more painful that way.

They are cutting 500 jobs and now charging $50.00 per year to read it online? Who is their CFO, Paris Hilton?

I can see why they hate Walmart so much. Walmart knows how to run a business - and I don't mean "into the ground" (like the NYT's). What's next? Will they up the price of the paper to $50 each?

Like at the Times, the bigwigs want to stay a Left-Wing news organization and let 500 people go jobless.

They just have not hit hard bottom yet, but we will keep workin' on them and they will!!!

Their problem is not enough editorials supporting gay marriage (and they need more cowbell also).

When I moved from California into Southern Oregon, it only took three days for the local newspapers to send someone to my door.

I told them after reading their trash for the past three months it would be like funding Al Queda; telemarketing the paper to Iran, North Korea, Syria or France would sell many more subscriptions than what they would get around here...

Recently, they started sending me solicitations with self-addressed, stamped envelopes. I send them back empty just to make them pay the postage.

Send them back with your own editorials, left over campaign bumperstickers, election pamplets, NRA literature, etc...

I get environmental and political junk mail and find magazines with postage free business reply envelopes for left wing looney groups. They all get a standardized letter I have photocopied for just that purpose... OR, just fold up all their crap and send it back to them...

Every one of these 500 people who lost their jobs should know it's a small price to pay to keep the paper ideologically pure.

If the NYT's went beyond the token conservative or three, they could appeal to the 50% of the population that's not liberal. But why bother? The elites are too good for the likes of "conservatives". Better to run the company into the ground.

Here's my suggesting to the NYT's: put out an inner office hate sheet for the staff and close friends, and run the newspaper for the benefit of all your customers.

If Walmart only sold to conservatives they wouldn't be big enough for you to hate ... take a page from their book and give value to your readers -- all of them.

I guess it would never occur to them to attempt to increase circulation by reporting the news in a more balanced fashion. NAH! That might make too much sense.

"You can be pretty sure that most of these 500 people are hapless flunkies. The leftists in charge will use their salaries to pay themselves more."

So true! It will truly be a great day when they get rid of the likes of Maureen Dowd, Clymer, et al. Like General Honore said, they are stuck on stupid!

Tell the truth, then hire 500 more people since your readship will swell.

"This represents a continuation of the initiatives the Company began earlier this year to find ways to operate more efficiently".

Uh-huh. Nice try. More like "This represents the consequences of our blatant liberal bias and subsequent rejection by the American public."

I actually got a call a month ago from the NYT trying to sell me a subscription (I live in FLA). Told them their paper is offensive, helps terrorism, and doesnt represent the interests of our country.

"OR, just fold up all their crap and send it back to them..."

Ah yes, the old folding all their crap up and mailing it back to them trick. I do this with the Sierra Club. I Somehow ended up on their mailing list for a few years and made a habit of mailing thir crap back to them in their own envelope. The amazing thing to me is that for a supposed "environmental" group, they mail out 4-color stickers, calenders, slick letters - all the bells and whistles. I guess the environment matters to them as long as it doesn't get in the way of their fund-raising.

I see these kinds of tactics as a sort of ultimate FReep where the object of derision funds the protest. Imagine millions of FReepers doing this.

Hard to tell at this point, but this one bears watching. I'm in a very small community in Tyler county about a hundred miles or so NNE of Houston. Considering how far inland the damage from Katrina was in Mississippi gives me pause.

In a pure stroke of genius, about ten days ago I ran an ad in the local "Peddler" to sell my 5000W genset thinking that someone could put it to good use somewhere. It sold almost immediately. My thinking was it was too large for my purposes anyway, not to mention too heavy to handle. A smaller unit of 1500W or so would fill the bill, but of course NOW there are no generators of any size to be had anywhere. Maybe we'll dodge the bullet.
