'Black Tuesday' Continues: 'NYT' Cutting 500 Jobs

NEW YORK The New York Times Company announced a staggering staff reduction plan Tuesday that will likely mean some 500 job loses at the company's many properties, including an expected 45 newsroom positions at The New York Times newspaper and 35 at The Boston Globe.
In a press release distributed Tuesday afternoon, the company said it "plans to begin the staff reductions in October and implement them over the course of the next six to nine months.
The news followed an announcement earlier in the day from Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., owner of the Philadelphia Daily News and the Philadelphia Inquirer, would seek to cut 100 jobs through buyouts.
The New York Times Company added that about 250 positions at The New York Times Media Group will be affected, including approximately 45 newsroom positions at The Times newspaper. At The New England Media Group, some 160 positions, including those at the Globe, will be lost. The Company's regional newspapers, broadcast outlets, and corporate staff will also be affected, the release said, but did not offer specifics.
"This represents a continuation of the initiatives the Company began earlier this year to find ways to operate more efficiently," a statement with the release said. "As a result of these efforts, the Company identified areas where it could function effectively with fewer people. Earlier this year the Company reduced its staff by approximately 200 positions, or about 2%.
The Company also stated it "plans to manage the staff reductions in such a way that it continues to provide journalism of the highest quality, to function smoothly on a day-to-day basis and to achieve its long-term strategic goals."
Maybe they should just charge their readers to link to Free Republic. They'd be in the black in no time.
And if we got 1% of the profits, there'd be no more need for Freep-a-thons.
Full Disclosure: The DUmmies who read NYT are probably too dumb to know they can get Free Republic on their own ;-)
Cheers!
Except that the Kulaks did actual work. LOL
because if the fire their columnists, they can't institute the pay 50.00 a year to read the opinion page plan.
Oh wait, I wasn't going to do that anyway:)
DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD!!??
No, at the Boston Globe the editorial staff are BTBK, or as Howie Carr muses, bow tied bum kissers.
'Black Tuesday'? We munchkins are singing "Ding Dong the witch is dead"!
Or at least things aren't going well at the `Ministry of Truth'. Cheers!
BDA shows the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy's latest onslaught had done major damage to the enemy's Command and Control capability...
A good start. I'd like to see that number rise to equal the total number of people employed by the NYT.
No doubt! And I really liked this little tidbit:
"the company said it "plans to begin the staff reductions in October and implement them over the course of the next six to nine months."
And I bet most of the firings will happen at CHRISTMASTIME! That evil, wicket scrooge of a corporate whore, the New York Times Company!
Boo Hoo.
I wonder if there's any chance they have to cut staff at their sucky offspring The Lakeland Ledger [FL]. No such luck I guess.
How can Krugman Dowd and Friedman spew all that liberal crap day in and day out and still live with themselves? These people have no shame.
The real question should be, given their socialistic tendencies, how much of their yearly salary are the "rich" NY Times Op-Ed writers willing to give up to keep these "working class" people on? Krugman? Herbert? Dowd? Rich? Any takers? Anybody?
Are those crickets I hear?
LOL! I posted something similar in another thread! Good one!
If it was, I can't imagine how they'll survive. There are only a small number of places left where one can make a living being incompetent with one's brain *and* hands.
And to some extent these very people and their editorial backers are complicit in the woes that the Grey lady finds itself in. The fact is conservatives gave up on this paper long ago. So that left moderates and flaming liberals supporting to some degree or another the Slimes circulation. But all has changed in the last ten years where we saw a huge change in technology especially information technology coupled with the advent of FNC and other mediums that has provided a forum for more reasoned moderate, conservative and libertarian ideas not seen in most dailies in a long time. This new paradyne has forced the Slime and other like minded papers to cater even more to their base: Rabid left wing idiologues in order to protect their subscription audience or what's left of it. In the end there will be no cheerleaders for the Slime. Libs eat their own in the end. The Slime will have to come to terms that it is not what it used to be. It is living off the residual Goodwill of it's own venerable past as the newspaper of record. Old man Sultzberger must be spinning in his grave!
What do they mean "continues"? What great news happened earlier today that I haven't heard about?
Smilin' thru the tears....
Tears of raucous laughter, that is.
and...
"Excellent!"
