The White House is reshuffling its short list of potential Supreme Court nominees with a new emphasis on finding someone who will hold up under the pressure of what is expected to be fierce confirmation battle, several Republican allies close to the process said on Monday. ...
The shift also indicates that the administration expects some Democrats' pent-up frustration with what they labeled as Judge Roberts's evasiveness to spill over into the hearings for a new nominee. Republican aides briefed on the search said the White House ...is examining the contenders anew in the expectation of a trial by fire.
Conservative allies of the White House said the new criteria could hurt the chances of Judge Janice Rogers Brown, a 2005 Bush appointee to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and a favorite of the president's conservative base.
Republican strategists close to the White House worry that Judge Brown, an African-American known for her fiery speeches to conservative crowds, might try to fight back against vigorous questioning.

And that's a reason not to nominate her? Seems to me that it enhances her credentials. Shumer deserves a verbal face-splapping. I'd say Kennedy, too, but he may like being slapped around ... .
Man thats who we want. Someone who will humiliate tehse pompus @ssholes! Then vote against her to show they support blacks and women!
Why should Bush allow himself to be held hostage to the "pent up frustration" of Democrats? Why should he be afraid to take them on? They're in the minority, fer chrissake.
Oh baby, JRB, bring her ON!!!! That is EXACTLY why I want her nominated. I want to see her tear Turbin, Kennedy, Schumer et. al. a collective new one.
The NY Times doesn't have any sources inside the White House. They're just making this up.
Leftists are racists.
Damn shame.
Agreed!
We are such a weakened people. Bush needs to nut up or im sitting out 2006.
I'd love nothing more than seeing Ms. Brwon staring down Leahy, Schumer, Turbin, Kennedy, et al. wouldn't you?
Should we believe the NY Times?
Ok what do we know about and Judge Consuelo M. Callahan? I am hoping Judge Edith Jones, but I am curious about Callahan.
She's the "John Bolton" for the Supreme Court.
Afro-american, woman, conservative; no one will dare contradict Judge brown
now remember..............this was in the new york slimes..........this is just liberal wishful thinking........Justice Brown would chew them up, and that scares the hell out of 'em!!!!!!!!!!
If anything was leaked to the Times you can be sure it was done to throw people off the trail. Just like last time.
Well good for Janice Rogers Brown. A woman of intelligence, professionalism and the courage to fight back. To sit there and be questioned is one thing. To sit there and be treated less than human by some of these gross, ignorant old fogies on the Committee is NOT ok.
They don't even write their own questions. They read them and therefore they are boring as hell when they are asking the question which takes them 20 minutes to spit it out and they are riddled with UH, AH, UH, UH, UH.
Well, if Janice Rogers Brown wants to fight back then I say she is the woman for the job! It's time the people appearing before this bunch of stale old men and women stand up and demand the same respect given the committee. The other thing I would tell the chairman of the committee is to tell his members to STOP cursing, and being so flippant. It's SUPPOSED to be a chamber of intelligence but it looks like nothing but a three ring circus with kennedeeeee being the main attraction and biden coming in a close second.
Go Janice. Give 'em hell!!!
It's a NYT article --- relax.
Other conservative strategists...
Never a source, only an agenda!
