Clinton: Bush should raise taxes to pay for recovery
CNN ^ | 9/19/05

Posted on 09/19/2005 2:16:47 PM PDT by Crackingham

Former President Clinton believes the Democrats should pounce on and exploit President Bush's refusal to hike taxes to finance Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"They should continue to oppose it, and they should make it an issue in the 2006 election, and they should make it an issue in the 2008 election," said Clinton, interviewed on Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

"I think it's very important that Americans understand... tax cuts are always popular, but about half of these tax cuts since 2001 have gone to people in my income group, the top 1 percent. I've gotten four tax cuts. They're responsible for this big structural deficit, and they're not going away, the deficits aren't."

Clinton said America's deficit has forced the United States to borrow "money from other countries to finance Iraq, Afghanistan, Katrina, and our tax cuts."

"We have never done this before. Never in the history of our republic have we ever financed a conflict, military conflict, by borrowing money from somewhere else."

The former president, who is involved in a Katrina relief fund-raising effort with former President Bush, elaborated on the issue of tax cuts, saying leaders should hope "for the sake of our country that the cows don't come home before we have time to rectify" the problem.

"I mean, sooner or later, just think what would happen if the Chinese -- we're pressing the Chinese now, a country not nearly as rich as America per capita, to keep loaning us money with low interest to cover my tax cut, Iran -- I mean Iraq, Afghanistan, and Katrina. And at the same time to raise the value of their currency so their imports into our country will become more expensive, and our exports to them will become less expensive."

The table is now set to cut spending in other areas.

Let the voters decide in 2006 and 2008 whether they prefer tax increases or spending cuts. The voters will take spending cuts, big time.

Please democrats, I urge you to listen to Bill Clinton, and run your campaigns on raising taxes. The government simply isn't taking away enough money from the hard working American people.

Clinton: Bush should raise taxes to pay for recovery

Only those taxes that enhance revenue should be raised. The ones that interfere with revenue, such as our current top income tax rate, should be lowered. Fortunately, if Bush gets serious about budget cuts (when ice hockey is played in hell, maybe), we won't need to worry about raising taxes. Maybe.

Only problem I have with this outlay of money for the releif effort is where does it come from? How long can we just keep borrowing and borrowing? Sooner or later either A) The bill will be due, or B) We can be so indebted to the Chinese that they will MANIPULATE us to havethem give us even more money.

Well if we cut taxes, we stimulate the economy and get more tax revenue. If we raise taxes we depress the economy and end up with less actual tax revenue.

I fully agree. I honestly think the democrats should run on tax increases. They should be honest and say that they want to raise taxes.

I agree completely, Bill. And Hillary should make it a centerpiece of her campaign.

Clinton: Bush should raise taxes to pay for recovery

A good question for Clinton would be: Is there ever a time or reason not to raise taxes?

I have to mention that I saw a poll about this in a Connecticut newspaper's web site, and so far, 80 percent of respondents did NOT want to raise taxes. I couldn't believe my eyes, this result coming out of this blue state. HAhahaha!

The liberal tax-sucking machine is insatiable. Quick, somebody add up all the things rats'd like us to pay for, whether express or implied. I'll bet it exceeds the total income of every man, woman, child -- and corporation -- in the country.

That's the little reminder the GOP should be hitting voters with hard in '06 and '08.

Never in the history of our republic have we ever financed a conflict, military conflict, by borrowing money from somewhere else

I would have expected a Rhodes Scholar to come up with a better argument than this one. He's banking on the ignorance of the average American to make a big deal of this.

In the larger scope of history, very few wars have been conducted without someone having to borrow from someone else. If borrowing to conduct a war were such a huge problem then virtually all of Europe and most of the rest of the world would already be owned by someone else.

"I've gotten four tax cuts."

Well if it bothers you so much Bill, give the freaking money back.

You make a very good point which could be easily reviewed by examining Big Bill's tax returns to see how much he gives back to the community.

And my rule of thumb with advice from democrats is to ALWAYS do the opposite, especially when Clinton is doing the talking.
