>>two Britons, allegedly undercover commandos

Something very ugly under the rocks type of thing about this story.

Undercover commandos? Sheesh.

What the hell were they reaally doing. Musta been important for the Britishers to rescue a couple of armed thugs by a prison break.

And if they weren't armed thugs, why were they undercover.

Why'd they shoot at Iraqi police.

WTF was really going on.

Stinks.

A British soldier jumps from a burning tank which was set ablaze after a shooting incident in the southern Iraqi city of Basra September 19, 2005. Angry crowds attacked a British tank with petrol bombs and rocks in Basra on Monday after Iraqi authorities said they had detained two British undercover soldiers in the southern city for firing on police. Two Iraqis were killed in the violence, an Interior Ministry official said. (Atef Hassan/Reuters)

Brits have a technique of using SAS/SBS under cover to take down bad guys by surprise... They have used it against the Provos for years. I suspect they were doing the same against traitorous police (recall that we have seen articles about police "hit squads" in Basra) and something went wrong. They then had to get the "lads" out and used force to do so... Its a dirty war and things don't always work as planned.

These would be the same troops we were supposed emulate in matters of getting along with the natives?

One wonders whether the 150 Iraqi prisoners who escaped were (suspected) terrorists.

I am on the side of the Brits and I only hope we have the balls to do the same thing if these buttheads take one of ours.

Good for the Brits.

I remember going through some police and or military check points in Iraq and we never stopped for them, because we did not know if they were legit. There were many cases of people being stopped at these check points and disappearing or finding their bodies later. I remember going through a military check point set up in the middle of nowhere and all the alarm bells were going off in my mind. I made sure that my weapon was off safe and pointed at the guy I was talking to. He saw it and waved us through. There was no doubt in my mind these were bad guys. I reported it to the US Army at the nearest base and a few hours later when we passed the same check point the Army had all these guys disarmed and cuffed on the side of the road.

There are too many people in and out of the government with their own agendas over there to ever trust them all.

You can bet your sweet a$$ that if America did the same you would be able to hear the screaming from Baghdad to Washington.

This story doesn't make any sense. Why didn't the Brits just call up the guy with keys, explain the situation, and get them sprung? That's what happens when the locals are within your military district.
