If some of those who died in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina have been described as stubborn holdouts who ignored an order to evacuate, then these citizens of New Orleans defy that portrait: The 16 whose bodies were wrapped in white sheets in the chapel of Memorial Medical Center. The 34 whose corpses were abandoned and floating in St. Rita's Nursing Home. The 15 whose bodies were stored in an operating room turned makeshift morgue at Methodist Hospital.

I guess they should have followed the evacuation plans then.

I wonder what the population of New Orleans was 50 years ago. I'll have to look it up.

Overall, about + 40%, maybe minus 5% inside the City limits.

Hospitals don't evacuate... Working in the health sector, we take that to mean that the hospital staff does not evacuate. However, all patients that can be evacuated should be!

I bet the then Republican governor, George Ryan got more blame than the Mayor of Chicago, or Clinton for the heat wave.

I don't remember if that happened, but there was plenty of other stuff to blame on Ryan!

Something about illegals getting licenses, an entire family was wiped out by a truck driven by an illegal with one of the licenses, 6 children, only the parents survived a terrible crash.

154 Patients Died, Many in Intense Heat, as Rescues Lagged

Within days 36,000 people were rescued. Rescued with no infrastructure. It takes time, literally days, to be able to call up NG or reserves, and have them on station. From there to get to the hot zone maybe another day. The fact that days later 36,000 non military people were mobilized out of the area is astounding.

Now take into account that the NG is controlled by each individual state, unless turned over to the Feds. And that Blanco, who is in charge of the LANG never brought in the LANG till after the disaster.

Add to this that the Feds, initiated by Bush, moved generators, equipment, food and water, into position outside of NOLA, PRIOR to Katrina. After Katrina left the immediate area, and the levees held, the feds began mobilizing said stores to Alabama and Mississippi where Katrina itself did the most damage. It wasn't until Tuesday, the day after Katrina hit, that the 2 levees broke. By that time, a lot of the stores were on their way to other disaster areas and had to be turned around. If they were on the road for 12 hours when the levees broke, it would take another 12 hours for them to return to NOLA. Some were already committed to Alabama and Miss. and were no longer available for NOLA.

Katrina hit NOLA at about 6:00am on Monday, the levees broke at about 1:30am on Tuesday.

Figures, if what I read (or heard?) recently is true: FEMA is a Jimmy Carter creation.

:Let's put this in perspective; One hundred fifteen people die per day from various causes in the state of Louisiana.

Tax,

I'm surprised that you would excuse the deaths of these elderly people by STATISTICS. Isn't that what the libs who think the death penalty is racist do? An unnecessary death is an unnecessary death, whether it comes in above or below the "averages."

If I may be so bold as to quote John Quincy Adams, speaking before the Supreme Court:

"Justice, as defined in the Institutes of Justinian, nearly 2000 years ago, and as it felt and understood by all who understand human relations and human rights, is—

'Constans et perpetua voluntas, jus suum cuique tribuendi.'

'The constant and perpetual will to secure to every one HIS OWN right.'"

Something SCOTUS ought to be reminded of again.

We cannot excuse all the NO deaths of the very ill and elderly who would have died that time period anyway, but at least 115 people die per day in Louisiana from various causes.

Certainly the folks that were left to die in that nursing home were murdered.
