~ MILITARY SHORT SPEAK ~ Military Rank - Part 2 Officers Ranks |
|
Today we're taking a side trip in the Short Speak journey to learn more about the different military ranks. Hopefully you're not as confused about it as I am! |
Officer ranks in the United States military consist of commissioned officers and warrant officers. The commissioned ranks are the highest in the military. These officers hold presidential commissions and are confirmed at their ranks by the Senate. Army, Air Force and Marine Corps officers are called company grade officers in the pay grades of O-1 to O-3, field grade officers in pay grades O-4 to O-6 and general officers in pay grades O-7 and higher. The equivalent officer groupings in the Navy are called junior grade, mid-grade and flag. Warrant officers hold warrants from their service secretary and are specialists and experts in certain military technologies or capabilities. The lowest ranking warrant officers serve under a warrant, but they receive commissions from the president upon promotion to chief warrant officer 2. These commissioned warrant officers are direct representatives of the president of the United States. They derive their authority from the same source as commissioned officers but remain specialists, in contrast to commissioned officers, who are generalists. There are no warrant officers in the Air Force. |
Naval officers wear distinctively different rank devices depending upon the uniform they're wearing. The three basic uniforms and rank devices used are: khakis, collar insignia pins; whites, stripes on shoulder boards; and blues, stripes sewn on the lower coat sleeves.

If you have a suggestion for a Field Trip - maybe a place where YOU have been stationed and would like to re-visit - PLEASE Freepmail it to starcmc!! Thanks!
Please remember: the Canteen is a place to honor and entertain our troops.
As such we attempt to keep it MOSTLY apolitical.

Ahem...MHS went to the 5-A State Championship in 2001.
I actually went to their playoff game against Tyler Lee at Texas Stadium.
We went into the playoff last yer and three of the last 4 years.
When you've gone as infrequently as we have...you remember the times and dates really well! LOL!

My younger son Gabriel and I were in the movie, too .. I worked for weeks on it while they were filming in Austin, and went to Odessa for filming during spring break with the boys. After all that, you can barely catch a glimpse of any of us in the movie.. the cameras were so tight on the principle actors that the extras are shown as blurry headless flashes for the most part.
Me, seated, getting bright 80's makeup and big 80's hair for a game scene.

HANKIE ALERT!!A Marine's last words
'If you are reading this then I have died in Iraq'
By Jennifer Warnick
Herald Writer
SNOHOMISH - Marine Cpl. Jeffrey Starr's last letter arrived home more than two months after his flag-draped casket.
It came unexpectedly, weeks after his parents had placed his dusty, worn combat boots on the fireplace ledge.
It arrived weeks after two U.S. Marines stood in uniform on his parents' porch, bringing the worst possible news.
Brian Starr discovered the letter on his 22-year-old son's computer, which had been stored with his other belongings near Camp Pendleton, Calif., awaiting the soldier's return from Iraq.
Brian Starr had to fiddle with the computer to get it to work. When the screen finally flickered on, he saw an icon labeled "LetterHome." Jeffrey Starr had written the letter in November 2004 to his girlfriend, Emmylyn Anonical, 22. It read:
"Dearest Emmylyn,
I'm writing this for one reason only. On April 13th 2004 I thought I was going to die. My only regret is that I hadn't spent enough time with you. That I hadn't told you everything I wanted to. Being in Iraq for a 3rd time, I don't want to feel that way again because it was the worst feeling ever. So this letter is in case I won't ever get the chance to tell you.
The rest of the story
