While the controversy continues over removing General MacArthur's statue, the Marine Veteran's Association decided to resolutely defend the statue starting from Sept 15, the 55th anniversary of Inchon Landing, which could escalate the tension between conservative organizations and radical (left-wing) groups.

3,000 Marine vets from the association made such a resolution, while they gathered at Inchon's Freedom Park at 2pm (on Sept. 15,) and held 'The Rally for Safeguarding National Security and General MacArthur's Statue,' 

Kim Myong-hwan, the former Marine Commandant, stated in his speech, "We will no longer tolerate the idea of dismantling MacArthur's statue, which is the symbol of S. Korea-U.S. alliance," and announced 'the Operation to Safeguard General MacArthur's Statue.'  

Starting on Sept. 15, 16 local branches of the association set up their own squads, and taking their turns to patrol around the statue, while the Inchon branch would separately operates 'rapid response unit.'   

The former commandant Kim said in his interview with Dailian, "If we ever detect a hint that radicals like left-wing pro-North groups come close to the statue to bring it down or hold a rally nearby, the patrol team will alert the rapid response team, and take care of them together with the help of police."

He went on to say, "If his statue is damaged, it is patently clear that it will greatly damage S. Korea-U.S. alliance. That is why we will repel radicals' insane attempt to bring down the statue."

In the 1950s when I was growing up on a military base in Japan, there was open debate as to which troops were meaner; the Turks or ROKs. My dad, who traveled to SK regularly, explained the ROK troop trainng regimen and left little doubt.

I've heard from my cousin who is stationed at the 38th that spy training is on a whole new level. Rumored is that these spies, used to infiltrate NK, are trained on an undisclosed island at the southern tip of Korea and that heardened criminals are sent to these islands to basically serve as fodder during hand-to-hand combat training. It started out as a black-op set up by Syngman Rhee, the president during Korean War, and when word got out to the public, there was an outcry by human rights activists and int'l community and supposedly the Korean gov't ended the program after demarcation. But everyone in korea knows it still exists...
