A three-month strike would cost the aerospace giant a hefty $1.1 billion in operating profits, according to an internal company analysis prepared for top executives. That's more than the commercial-airplanes unit's profit for all of last year.
A one-month strike would be much less costly. But even that could potentially delay by a month the debut of the company's new 787 jet.
To avoid that, Boeing is considering alternative suppliers for parts originally scheduled to be made by Machinists at its Auburn plant.

Note to self: Buy Boeing jets from now on...
I think the union has just about guaranteed that Boeing will do a major redesign on the 737. It will involve moving parts manufacturing to suppliers, with final assembly performed by Boeing.
They should have the letter "L" written in red on their foreheads.
Unions can not survive in the market place these days, only in a monopoly like the government and jobs also attached like the dock workers and teacher's union.
We need to end it, not mend it IMO.

When Boeing sold the facility here in Wichita they sold the primary facility for the 737 and 787 section 41 manufacturing. They are not on strike. Boeing has been moving from a manufacturer to an integrator for some time. For us on the military side we have to drive through the strike lines everyday. It is interesting that here in Wichita the average age of the strikers is 49. There is not much enthusiam on the picket lines.
There just has to be a very interesting story behind that picture.
There is.
It's interesting, though, that the machinists are giving up their paychecks to be on strike, and whatever benefits and economic package they "win" will be passed along to the professional bargaining unit, because SPEEA's contract is up on Dec 1, and then pretty much the same package will be offered to nonrepresented employees.
Not really sure why the machinists so blindly follow their leadership who tells them to go on strike. Their negotiation team receives a fully salary, don't they? I know their IAM president Mark Blondin receives his full salary while the rank and file give up their paycheck. I would hope they would smarten up one of these years.
Redesigning the 737 has nothing to do with the strike. It has to do with getting similar fuel efficiency like the 787 will have. You're right, TBC has been moving into a being a large scale system integrator, and if you notice, most of the machinists were not recalled to the Auburn plant where they make parts and they sold parts of that plant to Safeway and the YMCA. LOL
I agree that it looks like the union is not too enthused this year. Many of them have just returned to work after a long layoff due to 9/11. They need their paychecks. I have heard many of them want to go back to work, but they don't know how to get their union leadership off their butts to start renegotiating.

IAM here in Wichita is a very small part of the union (900 maybe) Seattle is driving the strike. At last count about 25% are crossing the picket lines. It certainly not like the strike 10 years ago. SPEEA claims they are watching the strike to develop their strategy for the first of the year. I am not a member of SPEEA and get a lot of recruitment lectures of late. The last strike by SPEEA was kind of disorganized. If they have a plan this time they are not telling anybody.
In Kent, there are only a handful of IAM strikers that stand on one corner. I have been honking and waving at them until I got my new Celica last week, and now they won't look at me. LOL
I am a member of SPEEA as a CR for the main reason so I can influence what happens to me. (I also belong to Boeing Management Assoc, LOL). I have been sending email to the negotiation team telling them that we do NOT want to strike and the reasons why. Did you consider letting them know how you feel. I encourage all people in my district to voice their opinion and I forward their email to Charles himself. SO many people just blindly follow. Not me.
How are the strikers doing this week in Seattle? Are you at the DC? It seems like they are getting more and discouraged, yet they don't complain about it to their "leaders". Don't understand how they can follow like sheep.
That's funny. Or sad, however you want to look at it. The Homeless look happier. LOL. There are a couple SPEEA VP's at the DC. I know Cynthia was out there herself at least once. Does Boeing Field have many hourly workers? So many are just coming back from that long layoff due to 9/11 and I'll bet they feel screwed to be off again!
Why do the IAM follow so blindly like that? Especially while their leaders are collecting their regular paychecks. I think I'd be at the union hall demanding some action.
SPEEA that's another thing, their contract is up in Dec. What Then ???
They think whatever the IAM gets, they will get, which makes sense. They are waiting to see what happens.
Yup !
