Son of Florida Gov. Bush Arrested

AUSTIN, Texas - The youngest son of Florida Gov.Jeb Bush was arrested early Friday and charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest, law enforcement officials said.

John Ellis Bush, 21, shown in this photo provided by the Austin, Texas Police Department, was arrested early Friday morning, Sept. 16, 2005, in Austin and charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest, a Travis County Sheriff's Department spokesman said. John Ellis Bush, 21, was arrested by agents of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission at 2:30 a.m. on a corner of Austin's Sixth Street bar district, said commission spokesman Roger Wade.

The nephew ofPresident Bush was released on $2,500 bond for the resisting arrest charge, and on a personal recognizance bond for the public intoxication charge, officials said.

Wade said he had no further details about the charges.

Gov. Bush and his wife Columba appeared Friday evening at a museum reception in Miami.

"My son's doing fine. It's a private matter. We will support him. We're sad for him. But I'm not going to discuss it on the public square with 30 cameras," the governor told reporters.

It's not the first time Florida's first family has experienced legal problems with one of their children.

Noelle Bush, the governor's daughter, was arrested in January 2002 and accused of trying to pass a fraudulent prescription at a pharmacy to obtain the anti-anxiety drug Xanax. She completed a drug rehabilitation program in August 2003 and a judge dismissed the drug charges against her.

No Law enforcement officer, including Game Wardens and TLCB, can enter a home without permission or a search warrant.

Wrong! I have had a TPW (Game Warden) come in my house because some idiot was shooting full auto during dove season and I had some friends that had been dove hunting on the same property until the full auto jerks showed up. He went through my freezer and the rest of the house before he went down to were they jerks were shooting and rousted them.

TABC can do the same with out a warrant as well.

Hang around for a while, before you criticize other peoples family structure. Hang and learn just how drunk with power even an officer can get. I expect the lad was irritated and could have been handled differently. Just because a parent gets a son arrested and before son is convicted, you suggest the family unit is not a strong family but it could happen to anyones family maybe even yours. I know that once a charge of alcohol is leveled,
the defence is very difficult and the cops know it therefore use the charge too easily to teach people to use discretion, not a good time to critisize the family who speak out publicly for personal responsiblity.

"Texas is coming down hard on PI's and they love to arrest the college kids.. it happens every single day all across the state. It made news because of being a BUSH. I honestly do not know how those kids can even have a normal life. 6th Street in Austin is full of bars and full of drunks as well as the University of Texas football game or any other college for that matter any Saturday of the fall........."

U obviously know Austin, Texas. I might add that that Austin is the MOST liberal city in the USA and they love to harrass the Bush children every chancec they get.

Isn't this the young man Jeb sent down to Mexico to campaign for President Bush in just before the 2004 election?

Disgusting that a kid can fight and die for his country and not be able to legally toss a few back.

It's not like he was driving, right?

Whatever. He's learning a tough lesson about being in the public light right now.

I hate to see anyone get in trouble - especially young people.

But correct me if I'm wrong, neither of Jeb's sons are serving their nation in the U.S. military.

You're right, I should have said if the government believe's that an 18 year old is old enough to "eat lead", then "driking alcohal" shouldn't be such a stretch.

I am becoming deeply disturbed by the increasing number of law enforcement agencies that are springing up around the country. The number of armed officers with arrest powers is growing and I fear the pool of persons really suited to that kind of work is being depleted. One of the constant challenges to law enforcement is to weed out, hopefully before they are hired, those whose personality or history who should not have a badge and a weapon, the wannabees. As the number of possibilities for employment increases, so too, I would think, will the odds of getting people who just can't do the job.

I taught Constitutional Law to Police Officers in Texas for years. The fact that you summitted to a search does not make it legal. Of course he could have been in hot persuit. If he observed you violating the law and did not have time to aquire a warrant.

In the past couple of years more than one TPAW Warden has been taken to court, and the courts rule the same way every time. They are not exempt from the constitution.

Read the constitution, you will not find an exception for Game Wardens and TABC Officers no matter how hard you look.

This belief started years ago when Game Wardens were civil officers, All they could do was issue summons, but when they became law enforcement officers the constitutional applies.

young Bush approached the Texas ABC guys to inquire about a previous arrest of some friends. I doubt they took too kindly to having their authority questioned and thus his fate was sealed.

LOL! No they don't. Sound familiar?

Pretty much I and all of of my friends in college could have been arrested for public intoxication, more times than I would like to admit. Thankfully, I never was.

I admit to doing a lot I could have been arrested for in my earlier years (notice, I didn't say in my youth, because I continued my horrid behaviour into my 30's, I'm afraid). However, I cleaned up my act through the grace of God. Now, I have a 12-year-old daughter, and you can bet your behind that I warn her against all the sinful behaviour, including drink and drugs, that I indulged in, and which took a heavy toll, the consequences of which extend to affect every member of my family even now. She looks at that, and she says, "yes, I understand, and I do not want that for myself." Now, does that mean I am ridiculous to be a "protector of family values?" No, I think it means that I love my daughter and do not want her to make the same mistakes I did.

Well Stated...

I will put on my flamies and add my two cents.

It is not a conspiracy to arrest anyone for being an drunk publically. Resisting arrest shows that not only was he drunk, but he could on a dime become violent towards anyone.

I support his arrest and applaud the officers that did their job.

Remember Al Gore's son.

And not just him. Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton and Bush 43 have all, at one point, been embarrassed by their kids.

It happens.

I hope JEB II learns to be more discreet from now on.

Amazing how some people on here are quick to excuse illegal behavior because it was committed by Republican offspring. Bottom line is that the kid messed up. If his last name was not Bush, we would have never heard about it.

If he were Bill Clinton's kid, some on here would be going nuts about it. All I did was post an AP story and note that it was sad that the kid acted in a way that ran afoul of the law. We don't have to like it - but these types of stories are used by the left to hurt their parents - "family values...". Would it be better if the kids were not caught? No, what would be best is if the kids did not engage in illegal activity.

Welcome aboard JFC - I prefer your cousin, KFC !

Hot pursuit in his mind only. He could not have observed me or anybody in the house violating the law because A) we had not B) we had been in the house for almost an hour before he climbed the fence to get on the property.

This was over 20 years ago.

Most LEO's could give a rats a$$ about legal (Constitution) or not, it's their word against yours when they pull this crap.

Thanks for the info. If it should ever happen again I'll fight it.
