Bush says spending cuts will be needed to pay for Katrina relief
WHITE HOUSE (AP) - There's going to be a lot of additional spending needed for the Hurricane Katrina recovery, but President Bush is ruling out a tax increase. He says the federal government will have to slash unnecessary spending to pay for reconstruction along the Gulf Coast.
At a White House news conference with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin, Bush said the recovery effort is "going to cost whatever it's going to cost." But he says, "We're going to be wise about the money we spend."
Last night, during a visit to New Orleans, Bush spelled out an expensive plan for rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, but he didn't specify how he'd pay for it.
Cut out all foreign aid for a start.
Stop the funding of the UN for a start
Cut out Medicare funding for Viagra.
Do note that the DOD expenditures include the vast majority of foreign aid.
