Bush says spending cuts will be needed to pay for Katrina relief

WHITE HOUSE (AP) - There's going to be a lot of additional spending needed for the Hurricane Katrina recovery, but President Bush is ruling out a tax increase. He says the federal government will have to slash unnecessary spending to pay for reconstruction along the Gulf Coast.

At a White House news conference with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin, Bush said the recovery effort is "going to cost whatever it's going to cost." But he says, "We're going to be wise about the money we spend."

Last night, during a visit to New Orleans, Bush spelled out an expensive plan for rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, but he didn't specify how he'd pay for it.

I'm with you. We could pay for Katrina and balance the budget if we only cut half of the pork in this budget.

...federal government will have to slash unnecessary spending...

What is necessary, isn't it all unnecessary spending. Nice to hear he wants to SLASH maybe this will be more than just a slower growth type "cuts" they have had in the past, those ARN'T Cuts.

I wonder how much of the health and human services goes to illegals?

Lifetime entitlements are where the big money goes.

This chart really puts it all into perspective.

All you can get are estimates, and that is divided between local, state and federal levels.

Factor in the estimated number of illegals (current estimates are somewhere around, but probably more then 10,000,000), then factor in how many servies they utilize, etc.

Any numbers you see are not going to be concrete and may be more or less, since alot of these folks are off the radar.

This is such total BULLSH*T!!!

Katrina relief is a ONETIME expense. We finance such INVESTMENTS with bonds. It will affect the deficit for ONE YEAR. Get over it and move on. The GDP is about 12 TRILLION. 200 Billion in one year is a blip.

Yeah, just put it on our grandchildren's tab. $200 billion works out to well over $1000 of additional debt for every American worker. Assuming an interest rate of 5 percent, it will cost well over $50 dollars of additional annual interest for every American worker, forever. I'm sure that none of them will complain about having their taxes raised a measly $50 per year.

I'd like to know why we are still spending un-neccessarily after almost five years. As for throwing money at Katrina...let it come from those who will profit from the rebuilding.
