You didn't follow me on the thread of Fed money trickling down to the private sector.

Just don't come crying to me when the best of the best get the biggest contracts. Government deals in contracting alot of the time, the most recent example is the federal government contracting Halliburton to handle most of the rebuilding in Iraq, because Halliburton has done it in the past with superior results to show for their efforts, and is capable of doing it in the future.

Huh??? Duh!!! That's EXACTLY the point I'm making....

Central Maine. If you could look past all the damage, broken trees, leaning power line posts and power lines all over the road, etc., it was quite beautiful.

Just as soon as I saw ABC was going to interview black evacuees still in the Astrodome, I flipped channels. Thanks for your report which proved I was wrong to think they would bash Bush's speech.

Why would they bash him? He has just given them 200 BILLION dollars at our expense. It is easy to be "loved" when you are giving away billions of dollars of other peoples money.

### No mention that before the storm we were at 4.9% unemployment.####

Before the storm, I actually saw a story titled "Unemployment slumps to 4.9%" The mindset of so many in the "news" business is so anti-Bush that their writing has become surreal.

Have you ever had a storm come through and take away everything you ever worked for in a 12 hour period? .....................

My wife did not have "a storm come through" but my wife did have a WAR come through and take away everything her family had worked for. BTW, it was not just a 12 hour period but the war lasted a lot longer than 12 hours, so her (and family) pain and suffering was worse than anybody in New Orleans. She also lost family members. However, she found a way to scratch and claw her way to a small job, then trade school and learned English by watching TV and listening to people talk, and eventually made a good life for herself WITHOUT WELFARE. She also paid back the only government loan she ever had--a student loan.

My grandparents did not have "a storm come through" but my grandparents did have Islamic radicals come through and kill many of their cousins and neighbors and siblings just because they were Christian, so they fled (ON FOOT---they did not have buses) for 80 miles and reached (relative) safety, came to the USA without English and without a penny, received ZERO government aid but found a way to raise a family without getting any piece of $30 TRILLION dollars of welfare money and various "entitlements".

The only "entitlement" my wife and my grandparents had when they arrived in this nation is they were "entitled" to use the opportunity to get a job then educate themselves then learn to think for themselves and have the pride and desire to do ANYTHING other than stand in line for $2000 debit cards so they could go buy $300 designer purses.

The President did NOT propose to scale back social welfare elsewhere in the nation to pay for Katrina. The President did NOT propose to scale back or eliminate all foreign aid to pay for Katrina. The President did NOT make it clear that we are not a centralized statist nation like North Korea or the old Soviet Union. As such, the President did NOT make it clear that the job of planning, preparation, execution and security control pre-Katrina and during Katrina was the job of Mayor Nagin in New Orleans. His "acceptance of blame" makes the ignorant masses believe all suffering is the President's fault.

Taxpayers are getting hosed--the President could have at least made that clear so he could look intellectually honest, even if he had to throw away another $60 billion.

Taxpayers have carried the people of New Orleans on their back the taxpayers' whole working life. My family of minorities (Arabs, Blacks and Latins) have had far greater hardships in their past than the people of New Orleans have ever had. While we found a way to survive, the people of New Orleans received free welfare checks (and free everything else) their whole lives. Even though we had greater hardships than NO people, we have pulled the cart these people are riding in for our whole working life while trying to make a life for ourselves (without freebies).

The sympathy should not be for the people of New Orleans. The sympathy should be for families like mine who sweated and suffered greatly to build a life while all the time supporting others through tax dollars and welfare. Bush had no plan tonight to end that. For us to spend $300 billion in Iraq and be closing military bases and cutting back on military hardware (due to "no money") and now propose BILLIONS in more social welfare without presenting a plan to cut back equal $$$$$ from other sources in the budget (some of the $1 TRILLION in social welfare FY 2006 budget) is a mark of a poor leader of the nation. Fiscal sanity is something we expect of our President.

So, don't assume these people suffered more than many of us have. We suffered greater tragedies but WITHOUT WELFARE and found a way to survive then prosper.

....because we had the desire to be independent, not dependent. Because we had no desire to see other people be stolen from (tax dollars) and then given to us.

This is not Ayn Rand World. John Galt does not speak over the loudspeaker in Manhattan. Bush is doing what the American people want him to do, and he and Republicans will be rewarded for it.

Even with almost every "news" outlet lying to the same American people.

For President Bush to say the New Orleans scene was due to "racial discrimination" is a kick in the groin to the pain and sweat my ancestors gave to teach my "minority family" how to get ahead in life. My nonwhite ancestors came to this nation in 1908 and had a far, far harder time than any black person in New Orleans. My grandparents did not receive one penny of any $30 TRILLION social welfare kitty.

@@@@

Would you trade your grandparents who were motivated to hard work and improvement for their children, with grandparents who thought that a life on the dole was adequate?

I thought not. Praise your antecedants, and pray that President Bush's plans will break the stranglehold that the dem giveaway philosophy has had on these destitute (psychologically) folks. In every generation more American blacks overcome poverty and join an anonymous middle class. The truely helpless and hopeless have been coddled and simultaneously held down by the "soft bigotry etc ...

This is a chance for a whole new direction for thousands of people.

Tell me, where in the speech does it say "building minority owned businesses" and "leaving most of the work to the private sector" is considered "welfare"?

"Building more minority owned business" is REVERSE DISCRIMINATION, since President Bush is implying here that some of the $60 billion (and more) will be spent to pump money to minorities who want to start a business.

My family is made up of minorities and we started businesses on our own without government help and found a way to survive, then get ahead then many of us prospered. My grandfather came to this country and, without government help of one penny, became a self-employed handyman and scratched up enough money to raise seven kids. My grandfather knew no English. The people of New Orleans were raised in the English language.

My grandfather (a minority) had no support from the government. The people of New Orleans have been raised and grew up on free EVERYTHING, and now free $2000 debit cards and free housing and free medical and free, free, free...... all paid for by me and other taxpayers, many of us who faced far greater hardships than these people ever faced. Compared to my grandparents and my wife (minorities), these people in New Orleans had a luxurious lifestyle with so many free benefits. But, my wife and my grandparents had DESIRE to get ahead in life.

The tables just shifted tonight, and half of the MSM doesn't have a clue that it just happened right before their eyes!

Friday morning update:
I just heard Bob Shieffer on a radio conversation praise both the president's speech and John Roberts. QUITE a turnaround from his condescending remarks last Friday morning.

Since he has NO love for Bush or Republicans, I'd say he recognizes the sea change that is occuring right now. It will be fun to watch for others.

If someone with a (D) next to their name does it then it's welfare and socialism. If a person with an (R) does it then it's extending hope.

THAT, pretty much sums it up! Blackbird.

This is a chance to try and turn some of that around.

$30 trillion since LBJ on free handouts have yet to "turn it around". The $100 billion or so spent here wil not change that, just cause more pain to taxpayers.

There are other minorities who have faced far greater hardships and, without government freebies, "turned it around" out of just their desire to do so. You can see some of my other posts for firsthand stories about this.
