For President Bush to say the New Orleans scene was due to "racial discrimination" is a kick in the groin to the pain and sweat my ancestors gave to teach my "minority family" how to get ahead in life.

Cite in the speech where he mentioned that. If he said that, and he didn't, I'd be calling him on the carpet too, and I'm white.

Also, there are few, if any countries on the African Continent today where blacks can do better than they can in this country.

One can argue that the problems of Africa today are a result of colonialism. That doesn't exuse the problems, but much of the problems of the dark continent are in fact related to a history of Euro meddling. The Congo being a prime example.

But they have gotten a lot from the Government since that time.

True, unfortunately, the gubmint has only exacerbated many of the problems by ti's "help".

It's a testiment to African American culture that it has been able to survive, in many cases thrive to influence the world in spite of the challenges this country presented to them.

Thank god for religion.

"You could hear the disappointment in his voice... and you know why his field producer picked the interviewees he did!"

Those Katrina victims know better then anyone the order of dismal response failure, City, State & FEMA, even though the ABC agenda liberal was trying to get everyone to say "Bush was to blame for everything". The real public speaks again :)

When Reagan signed budgets with tax increases latr in his second term he was cursed out as being not conservative either.

Of course. As for his immigration reform, it was nearly the same, if not worse, than this President's.

Wait for the transcript to come out. That's all we can do unless somebody has a video of the whole thing.

I just watched the replay of President Bush's speech. He is a man of honor and compassion. The other side just doesn't get it.

I know President Bush and our country need all of our prayers now more than ever.

You are funny and I kind of like your style. Yet it is glaringly obvious that you have never experienced poverty, nor lived outside of the good old USA.

You are correct, that I have not experienced poverty...thank God and my parents...

However, I would venture to guess that you haven't lived in the USA.

My point was THEY WOULD NOT BE DOING BETTER IN AFRICA than in the United States of America. This is the place were they (and anyone) has the best chance to overcome burdens of all sorts.

I've been reading all the posts since I fell asleep and missed the speech! Trying to get a sense of what was said, etc.. So my take on it is that not only is GW bringing the full might of the fed govt. to the job of rebuilding NO, he's addressing the plight of the residents, many of whom lived on welfare or basically hand to mouth. The speech was a lure, if you like, to get people to come home and help rebuild. Come back, work hard, and your life will be better. It gives them hope, and God knows the past month has been woefully short on that.

Sure, even with an inspector general and an army of bean counters, money will be wasted or end up in the wrong pockets. Not good, but human nature being what it is, it's inevitable. The city has to be rebuilt, for a whole host of economic reasons, not to mention the national psyche. We simply can't write off NO.

More interesting, though, is Bush's 'grand' vision. Just as with his reaction after 9/11, he looked beyond the attacks, not only proposing to deal with immediate concerns -- tracking the killers to their lair and finishing them off -- but the cause of the attacks. His answer is a democratic Iraq. Plant the seed and let it flower. People everywhere want to be free. Well we're giving Iraqi's the chance, and it sounds as if he's giving NO's residents that same chance. Get off welfare and a lead a better life. This seems to be how GW's mind works.

Thanks for covering my back, Eragon, but I think he's talking about Howlin.

He's still dead wrong, of course, but that doesn't seem to make much difference to these guys....

Careful, you are messing with a Freeper who is pretty full of herself and doesn't have much sense of humor.

Just a general observation from lurking here the last year or so.

While you were "observing", you may have noticed that it is customary to address your post to all parties you are referencing.

If you're talking about Howlin or OhioWFan (or someone else), you should ping them so they don't miss your rather personal remarks.

But don't worry. I'll catch it for you this time.
