He talked about homesteads. Now if he can just keep the sharks from coming in and offering poor people too little but what seems a lot for their "homesteads."

but not all of these people have wrongful death claims to file like the 9-11 people. many of these people didn't lose homes - they rented. they lost personal belongings, jobs, cars - they could be generously made whole and move on to other locales (many will do that on their own anyway). and that's how they should be handled - the parts of NO that people will not be able to return to short term, that need to be completely leveled - should not be rebuilt. there is a significant part of the city that will come back online in a modest amount of time - get that going, get those people and businesses back in, use the federal money to rebuild infrastructure, and make the other evacuees whole with public and private money and let them move on.

Like a glove.

I didn't hear the speech...getting ready to start classes next week and I'm in "one week to go" panic mode and missed it. Aack.

But all the people I trust around here loved it, and the usual suspects hated it. So I am very pleased!

I'll try to record a rerun to watch this weekend.

The "chains" ended over 100 years ago. Your retort collapsed before it began.

-- Governor Blanco: "I am greatly heartened by President Bush's strong words tonight reaffirming the nation's commitment to rebuilding southeast Louisiana. I believe the President was sincere when he said, "There is no way to imagine America without New Orleans, and this great city will rise again."

Hah! Can you see what the President did? He took the wind out of her sails.

First, he took responsibility for whatever the federal government DID and didn't do -- and she couldn't let him have the high moral gound to himself, so she said she took responsibility for what Louisiana did or didn't do. That statement may well come back to haunt her.

Tonight, he promised federal resources -- and she had to endorse that because she wants all she can get -- but he also said federal expenditures will be supervised by the Inspector General. Federal supervision will put the Governor in a box, and may put a lot of profiteers in jail.

FR is such a great place, isn't it? We're two steps ahead of everyone all the time!

Yes, but being two steps ahead makes my blood boil when I hear the boneheads on TV who aren't their yet!

For President Bush to say the New Orleans scene was due to "racial discrimination" is a kick in the groin to the pain and sweat my ancestors gave to teach my "minority family" how to get ahead in life.

Please give us the exact quote where he said that.

----Can't run the Port of New Orleans with a "shell."----

Of course not; then again, all things being equal, New Orleans should be the oil capital of America. But it isn't, and that's precisely because....

----The corruption has run off a great many businesses. Now is the time to bring them back.----

Why would they come back? Louisiana was bleeding industry long before this; the exodus will now be a full-scale flood. Very simply, it doesn't pay to do business in this state, and corporations everywhere know it. Since the institutionalized corruption of Louisiana shows no signs of changing even after this, and since between a third and half of the entire state's economy went bye-bye right along with N.O., why should things do anything but get worse?

Did anyone capture Mayor Noggin's insightful thoughts on the subject?

"Hey, there's gonna be a party in the Quarter this weekend! BTW, all you "thugs" stay out, you're somebody else's problem now!"

Now THAT's LEADERSHIP! /sarc.

When the 'usual suspects' hate a speech, you know it's stellar.

This was a GREAT speech, polly. Make sure you see it, and don't just read a transcript.

Yep. Sometimes it's painful to be educated when faced with glaring ignorance.

And the media (even Fox sometimes) is full of it.

Watch the Republicans get about five percent of the black vote in '08.
