9 P.M. EDT.
That is the great thing about the Blogosphere, somebody has it and somebody will post it online.
I just heard their reporter, Dean Reynolds I think, was baiting the people and trying to get them to blame the President but they would not!

Europeans arrived in the New World with Freedom and opportunity.
Blacks came involuntarily in chains.
Your argument collapses before it begins.
yes, and the problem is that the republican party is now committed to this - if it fails, if we end up as I fear we will in several months with alot of people screaming "where is my free new house" - what do we do? where do we go? there is no pulling back from this, we are now committed to spending as much as it necessary to keep it under control.
we won't be able to field a presidential candidate in 2008 who is against this, or is in any way critical of it.
this is what I would say to alot of fellow freepers on this thread, whom I respect but disagree with on this particular issue. WE OWN THIS THING NOW. Just remember that, we own it, there is no turning back.
This is my favorite!!
The "fact" is, pet, that FEMA was using government money ( but FEMA stopped handing out those cards almost immediately !), but the Red Cross used its own money. Facts matter; learn some.
"As for granting conservatives control, if I heard the President right tonight, he is going to give locals the control."
Devil is in the details, but from the speech:
"And the federal government will undertake a close partnership with the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, the city of New Orleans and other Gulf Coast cities so they can rebuild in a sensible, well planned way. Federal funds will cover the great majority of the costs of repairing public infrastructure in the disaster zone, from roads and bridges to schools and water systems."
Keywords "close Partnership", means no blank checks, call us if you need more.
There is no mention of the 200 billion being bandied about ala the 10,000 dead. Infrastructure gets the City working
again.
Got to be done. It is a legitimate role of the Fed to help here. As legit as common defence in my view.
Great speech. Puts the D on its heels. Will get the job done.
By 2008, it will be a shining example of accomplishment.
Maybe they got their fifth grade education in a public school in California or Massachussetts. (My apologies to my CA and MA friends)
Whatever their educational level is, they don't even have a rudimentary knowledge of LBJ or the Great Society.
And they're advertising it on a public forum. Yikes!
And you're right.........it's NOT funny. It's symptomatic of a national ignorance that makes it very hard for truth to make its way into the American mind. There's not much there to work with.........
And if I recall correctly, many of the same kind of people complaining today felt EXACTLY the same way during the first two years of the second Reagan Administration.
"Not conservative enough, letting in those foreigners, spending like a drunken sailor, not standing up to the Democrats or Communists nearly enough....blah, blah, blah. Somewhere between then and now...he became Saint Ronnie.
How? Results. Never underestimate the power of results.
And more people are awakening the fact that this is how the left "does" politics. It's ugly.
And they get to go to the ballot boxes and decide...
"Hmm... more ugly race-baiting, more poverty, more dependency, more taxes, more government, more bureacracies, more foodstamps, more special educational programs...
.. or..
"well shucks.. that man over there has promised jobs, has proven to grow the economy, has increased ownership, reduced taxes, tracked down terrorists and those who aid them, built new international coalitions to address evil-doers and those with innocents being targeted for death; demanded accountability from pub ed institutes, reformed tort law, put a cap on frivolous lawsuits...
"OH!" What a decision, no?
Pretty much. And as a certified BushBot (until I disagree with Howlin, which makes me a closet Democrat :)), even I have to say that his speech tonight was so full of excrement it made the Superdome look sparkling.
It's bad enough that Louisiana's largest city was destroyed and what passed for its economy largely wrecked. No, Bush's solution to a problem that doesn't have a near-term solution is to addict even more people to government than ever. When I hear pundits I respect comparing Bush to FDR and LBJ, two presidents I despise, something is very wrong. And I'm pretty cold to the notion that expanding government dependency is OK as long as our party gets to be the dealer.
And the glib, misty-eyed dreaming about New Orleans coming back bigger and better than ever made me nauseous. We'd all like to believe that, Mr. President, but it ain't gonna happen. New Orleans isn't coming back as much more than a shell.

The DISH company says the dish would work if I'd cut down a few trees. Unfortunately those trees are in the State Forest....Click on Hoosiermama and you'll see my delema....NOT
(only miss it occasionally)
Would be anxious to know if she double dated with Joe and his good buddy the Congressman Gary Condit and his (murdered in Rock Creek Park) girlfriend. Do you have a link to the rest of the story?
Thanks. Having fun over there now! :-)
That is the whole point of the speech tonight. The fedgov is not going to rebuild everybodys private property. Infrastructure comes first. Incentives for private development. I heard nothing about building "public housing units" (read slums). Feel free to correct me.
Unfortunately you do not have the ability to opt out of the benefits received from the commerce that the entire gulf coast region enables. Ever consider the Mexican riviera? You might even be able to declare your LEASED land sovereign, and request USAID. BTW, their sanitation and utilities are a little lacking. No post office. And the police, medical, and fire services leave just a little bit to be desired. Not to worry about insurance though. Your insurance program will consist of extra tin for your roof that is wrapped in burlap and buried in the back yard.
You are funny and I kind of like your style. Yet it is glaringly obvious that you have never experienced poverty, nor lived outside of the good old USA.
Anyway you slice it, the Feds are in for the long haul.
Call it a "great society" program with an "ownership society" twist.
Better than straight up handouts of the 60's.
Conservatives like you give the rest of the Conservative movement a bad name and the reason why all of us are emblazoned with the label "cold and heartless S.O.B's" on our chests by the left and so many reasoned people in this country. You've mentioned wreckless spending in this thread, while I agree with most of it, in this regard, you overshoot the "wreckless spending".
Sadly for you and those who think like you, you'll never be satisfied, if all you do is gauge every movement by this President as "too Conservative" or "not Conservative enough".
You'll always find something to carp about, whether Bush did "too much" or "too little".
Enjoyed the chat. More later. Goodnight.
If I didn't know better, I'd say you were his husband :).
