Let's say we did nothing, and said "every man for himself." Those one million people would be wandering this country for generations, dragging down whatever area they settled in.

Exactly, this isn't just about the Gulf Coast, but all those cities and communities who took in evacuees. They deserve to know that there is a long term plan for evacuees to either rebuild their lives in their new cities or to return to New Orleans. Closing our eyes and hoping things will just shake out is unrealistic.

Good!

Wonderful, another nanny-stater. You may trust "W" and the federales now with a state or region takeover, but I think your vision is short sighted. If the people in a state or region won't elect competent people to handle these sorts of things, why is it the federale's job to make it right? This only encourages the Dim base to continue voting for incompetent "leadership" IMO.

Why did the President blame NO on "racial discrimination" when that is NOT true?

BS.. It is true. The Great Society has exacerbated and institutionalized the poverty of many in the black community.

Yet, it was slavery and discrimination that lead the government to enact these ultimately destructive programs in order to "rectify" the disadvantages that stemmed from the discrimination.

IMHO, it was politically astute for the president to focus on racial discrimination as it gives the Republicans a powerful weapon to continue to pull black voters from the Democrats.

A lot of people have turned on the President tonight.

No, these are the same fools that have been trashing him since 1999, with a few new ones thrown in.

The Prez is no fool. He is wise AND compassionate. But his proposals are proposals that must be passed by Congress.

It is likely Congress as a whole will only consider such sweeping reform and spending if the military is cut back in Iraq, etc.

This gives the administration an opportunity to cut back and save face since the humanitarian effort must proceed. When the big gov and mercy programs fail -- as some of them surely will --- the Dems will have both a messy Iraq situation AND a stagnant U.S. gulf recovery on their backs in 2008

Your own question has exposed your deficiency, renters cannot get flood insurance. You sir, are an idiot.

You've just exposed your own ignorance. I had flood insurance when I rented. Get a clue before you lecture others.

Do you know how flood insurance works?

They pay you and take what's left of your home.

He has been attacking President Bush as being more liberal than LBJ and he was trying to force Senator Vetter Republican from LA to agree with him. The Senator did not agree with him on this and when Scarborough told him that President Bush is going to give all the money to State and local officials of LA without any interferance from the feds, the Senator slammed him quickly and told him I do not think the President said this in his speech. Scarborough of course never mentioned that President Bush repeated in the speech that there will be general inspectors from the federal to oversee the spending. This guy is worse than Matthews because he poses as a conservative on his stupid show.

Six years? You sure about that?

Let's see..........January, 2001 (actually several months later than that before he had anything to do with what was spent), to September, 2005.

Yeah. That's 6 years alright.

I bow to your superior intellect. You must be right about everything then......

I cannot, for the life of me, understand how you faux conservatives keep getting responses from mostly intelligent FReepers.

I wouldn't give you guys the time of day.

Congratulations.

Oh yeah, this is my only and last post concerning this and just hope the FReep Republic will start to ignore your type.

The printer must have left that part out of my copy of the Constitution.

Why don't you wave your Constitution in the face of a man who's trying to rebuild his life after losing everything?

If you don't want to help, just sit down and get out of the way of those who do.

You're taking up valuable space.

I watched it. You think the $200 billion is just going to be in the form of tax breaks?

200 Billion is the emergency relief. This storm covered 92,000 square miles (large than the Great Britain) and effected MILLIONS of Americans.

As Arlen Specter would say, this is a "Super Duper Catastrophe"

The difference is he encouraged the poor to actually work and not depend on welfare.

Not a difference at all. Every government program since the 80's has had this "get a job" proviso on it.

Standard boilerplate
