tucker carlson saying "this is a guilt speech, and the only way a guilty government knows how to make it right - is to throw money".He is 100% right. Bush has been buying votes for 6 years now.

Jeff, this is what the Federal government is supposed to do. When something happens that is bigger than any single state can handle, the rest join together and help them out. By providing some emergency relief then yes. To totally rebuild the area, then no. Why did no one have flood insurance?

Thank you for letting me know this, NautiNurse. Mercy did need a time-out. She was gettin' all wrung-out and SHE-sterical. (I could tell by her "fightin' style, or lack thereof...)

"The Fed has to step in in a big way, but let's have them do some feasibility studies on how best to remedy the situation before tossing hundreds of billlions of dollars haphazardly too quickly at the most incompetent and corrupt state state-run government in the land.""Fair point."
Quite frankly, the Fed is scary in a Santa Claus-way.
Hadn't they just handed out $2,000 debit cards to thousands of people, only to recognize how dumb it was and withdraw the program?
The Bush Administration -- without first considering logistics -- is trying too hard to bendover backwards to "prove" they "care" in the face of criticism from the MSM, Jesse Jackson, and the Dems.

I'm not sure I understand your point. It sounds as if the issue is with your neighbor, or perhaps a region, not a whole race of people.

There is NO way anyone can oversee let alone protect against corruption in the disbursement of 200 BILLION dollars worth of government dole. Just look at the boondoggle $2,000 dollar card program that the government just instituted last week. We are just talking about a measly 20 to 40 million dollars. Did you hear what a "success" that was? There was so much corruption, graft and chicanery going on in the space of ONE week that it had to be put on hold. That is peanuts compared to what the president outlined tonight. We are talking about the greatest rebuilding project America has ever undertaken. If you want to get a glimpse of what is going to happen, just take a look at the corruption and cost overruns boondoggle the "BIG DIG" project was in Boston! N.O. is going to make that look like a sand castle in comparison once Nagin and Blanko et. al. get through with it.
Yes Yes Yes, did I say Yes?, you get it! This will be the biggest boondoggle ever hoisted upon the American people. Blackbird.

You know my head is spinning. I really thought this hurricane migh have wrecked the GOP's wonderful effort to bleed the black vote from the Democrats.
With Bush's speech tonight, he just may have ripped open the Dems aorta.
Brilliant.

Let's say we did nothing, and said "every man for himself." None of us are saying that. Most of us agree in principle with you.
HOWEVER........
Why did the President mention Mayor Nagin as part of his recovery team?
Why didn't President Bush (considering we are spending billions on Iraq), state that many social welfare programs, foreign aid, pork projects etc., will need to be STOPPED while we pay for this recovery?
Why did the President blame NO on "racial discrimination" when that is NOT true?
Why didn't the President end all this media hysteria claiming Bush is responsible by telling the nation the LOCALS are responsible? Part II---why did he say he was to blame again???????????
Miss Marple, only nations that have a centralized statist government (like North Korea and the old Soviet Union), have the Federal Government responsible for planning, preparation and management of a current event like a hurricane. Either admit (President Bush) we are communist (statist, centralized or whatever you want to call it), or STOP this Federal government accepting blame for local responsibilities. Why is States' Rights thrown in the dumpster by our leaders on national TV?
Yes, agreed it is a huge disaster, and yes, agreed the Feds should help in the clean-up, but the socialism meter is pegged into the red zone and that is tragic for our nation. All I want is some practical response from our government that is formatted around the beliefs this nation was founded on, such as States' Rights (and responsibilities), limited government and FISCAL SANITY!
Our nation was not served well with this speech.

You're a conservative in the same way my grandma is a wagon. She ain't and you ain't.So your definition of a conservative is a person who spends other people's money? Why did no one have flood insurance?

Our President proposed using the federal government in the right way tonight...as a means, not an end! Essentially, yes.
With acceptance the public is addicted to the "security" and monies doled out by government, there is a conditional acceptance of the reality provided measures are in place to lead to an outcome that discourages reliance on government, more reliance on self and one's own neighbors, in the long term.
That is the essential root intent of private accounts, and imo, the proposals tonight in aftermath of the hurricane.

What G.W.B. seems, to me, to be proposing is taking, for an example, Americans adapated to the Welfare state. Putting them in a program similiar to that they left in the sense immediate needs are fullfilled, but in conjunction advancing programs to educate and train so that they can be stripped from the welfare rolls eventually. I think you have it right, at least I've thought the same thing for a long time. It takes time to undo and rebuild. In this case, Hurricane Katrina has presented him an opportunity to effect changes in an inner city that two terms never would have. Yes, lots will be spent to rebuild, but we will rebuild on different beliefs, with different incentives.
