'I Eat Babies' Painted At Central Fla. Church

POSTED: 12:42 pm EDT September 15, 2005
UPDATED: 1:37 pm EDT September 15, 2005

Police in Sharpes, Fla., are investigating a case of vandalism at a Catholic church in which the message "I eat babies to stay young" and other words were spray painted on signs.

Officials at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church located on U.S. 1 north of Cocoa said vandals painted words on their main church sign and a thrift store sign. "We haven't had any problems out here before ... no other run-ins. They also spray painted another sign with the word "Ozi" and I initially thought they may have been referring to Ozzie Osborne," said Deputy Robert Johnson of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

The vandals caused more than $1,000 worth of damage at the church.

Besides the cost to fix the damage, church members said the "I eat babies" message is disheartening. "I'm discouraged, really discouraged," church member Frank Monachello said. "It does not make me angry. It makes me discouraged that people would do something like that. It should not be."

"The message, what does it mean? They also took green paint and totally ruined our signs," said Lula St. Jean, the secretary for the 800-member church. St. Jean said the vandals also painted a left turn arrow on a right turn only sign leading to the divided U.S. 1. "That could have been bad for someone so we took that down," she said. "It's just so senseless."

Church officials said they will replace the signs during the next few weeks. There are no suspects in the case.

If you have any information concerning this crime, you are urged to call Crimeline at (800) 423-TIPS.

Would you be similarly inclined to poo-pooh any Conservative involvement in a case of vandalism on an abortion clinic? Would you also be so very quick to suggest that there is no political component to that?

Absolutely, most abortion clinic attacks are committed by religious fanatics, some of whom may be conservative but certainly not all.

The Church I live close to has had pentagrams painted on it a few times. This is out in the middle of the country so there's hardly any chance of catching the people

Sadly, it appears that churches will need to begin investing thousands of dollars in video surveillance equipment in order to protect themselves, much like gas stations do.  What a sad world we live in now "sigh"

Wow... I've been to this church when I lived in FL in the 90's

It's particularly hurtful when violence and crime hits home, isn't it?  Hopefully your church will be able to repair the damage soon and that the criminals will quickly be caught.

These people don't even know how to spell Ozzy Osbourne's name.

Maybe they were trying to spell Ozymandias. You know, a group of drunken poetry fans out to make trouble with spray paint.

Maybe they're graffiti artists. Artists are always trying to be 'shocking', aren't they?

In their defense, as I said, the parish may have inherited that unfortunate name from some previous pastor/parish council. I'm not sure how easy it is to change these things.

Absolutely, most abortion clinic attacks are committed by religious fanatics, some of whom may be conservative but certainly not all.

So, you are willing to suggest that 'most' attacks against abortion clinics come, in general, from the Right, yet you wish to quickly suggest that there is little if any chance that a crime against a church such as this has any Left-wing political motivation whatsoever.  You're entirely welcome to your opinion of course, I'm just intrigued by your willingness to spell it out in it's glaring inconsistency.

This is all just conjecture, of course, but the evidence I'm seeing points to a bunch of drunken or drugged kids who have been getting a preponderance of Leftist, anti-religious messages in their lives and so when they're in a troublemaking mood their first impulse is to target the object of their derision, a symbol of tradition and religion.

Again, I will be delighted to post any public statements from Left-wing organizations who wish to disassociate themselves from this, but I won't hold my breath, as such statements have been historically sparse in such circumstances.

I didn't notice 'Community' on the sign until you pointed it out. Isn't that precious?

Well then, no problem. I imagine they've stopped eating babies and all that sort of rubbish.

Can't help but wonder if it wasn't a group of Muslim homosexuals who committed this crime.does bear the earmarks of sentiments both groups have expressed.

That is absolutely NOT what I stated and you know it.

Your right, of course it was left winger, why I wouldn't be suprised if Franken and Soros funded the attack with money the syphoned from Air America. How oh how could I have been so blind!??

Good day to you.

LOL! Probably, but it's very possible they inherited that name ("Community" instead of "Church") from some long-gone groovy flake.

A real conservative would not vandalize an abortion clinic. So, no I would not think of conservative involvement at all in such vandalism.

Don't confuse the skewed thinking of those who do such things with political conservatism.

That is absolutely NOT what I stated and you know it.

You seem to be implying that I am intentionally misinterpreting or misrepresenting your statements.  I assure you, this is not the case.  I am merely trying to understand your perspective, which appears highly contradictory to me.  If you would kindly restate your position I will be happy to reconsider, but from what you have said so far I am left with the opinion that you are quick to blame attacks on abortion clinics and other Left-wing entities as being, in general, from the Right, yet you are extremely quick to disassociate any Leftist politics or motivation from church vandalism such as this.  I am happy to listen if I have somehow misunderstood you; no offense is intended on my part at least.

Your right, of course it was left winger, why I wouldn't be suprised if Franken and Soros funded the attack with money the syphoned from Air America. How oh how could I have been so blind!??

Funding for this act of vandalism was most likely rather minimal; probably about ten dollars to cover one can of spray paint and a couple tubes of airplane glue for huffing.  Even given this budget, Air America would most likely have had trouble paying the bill as they can't seem to get advertisers and have been funding their operations by siphoning money from Boys and Girls clubs.  Ten dollars is probably a lot of money for Air America right now, and they may need to find a new cash cow.  Perhaps a cancer charity would be a good target?

Good day to you.

And the same to you as well.

Wait a minute. Isn't it the political anti-religious left in this nation that demands that unborn babies be murdered?

I don't follow the logic in the vandalism.

Then again since when did vandalism have to make sense.

Of course you're right and I didn't mean to imply such a thing.  Conservative groups and organizations as well as religious ones are always quick to disassociate themselves from criminal acts ostensibly perpetrated in their name by people who are confused in one way or another.  It would be nice if Leftist groups were as quick to do the same.

One might assume you do as well, no?

Of course.  If you're referring to the sign, it is merely one additional part of the puzzle.

For myself? Sure. For those who are of that denomination? Not at all. Everyone to his/her own beliefs.

Jack Chick is a wierd dude. I've found him amusing for many years, and have a nice collection of his comic strip tracts. I didn't have "The Death Cookie," though. I've ordered one.

Although MM is a professed atheist, I have never known him to slander the Catholic Church or misrepresent her teachings.

Jack Chick, who professes to be a Christian, does both.

The irony is stunning.
