So my first-grader daughter's school is participating in this Pinwheels for Peace project, in which the kids make pinwheels for peace and display them on the school lawn for International Peace Day (September 21).
Sounds innocent enough. I like peace. But this International Peace Day is a creation of the corrupt, hypocritical and odious UN, and among other things calls for a world-wide 24-hour cease fire. Wonder if the Iraqi insurgents will sign on to that, or whether just our coalition forces are expected to lay down their arms and make themselved vulnerable to attack.
Im not going to jump to conclusions here. Ill keep my mouth shut and just watch. As I say, I like peace, and dont mind them teaching that kids should not resort to violence to solve their problems (even though most of them already know that by this age).
But if I find out that this event is just another propaganda effort to bash our efforts in Iraq and encourage our premature withdrawal, or to give our kids a phony touchy-feely picture of the UN, like the appalling appearance of Kofi Annan on Sesame Street, I will be irate.
(Ill never forget Kofi's little bit on Sesame Street, where all the muppets were arguing until that self-serving phony appeared to settle the argument. Then at the end all the muppets started shouting: We solve OUR problems the UN WAY! It was enough to make me puke.)

Woe to the wicked if my daughter comes home spouting any pro-UN or anti-Bush propaganda, or if she suddenly starts expressing opinions about why we shouldnt be in Iraq.
So far, I've been pleased to see that the school requires the kids to start everyday with the Pledge of Allegiance, and the posters on the hallway walls last year about what makes America great (don't see them this year.)
But I dont trust the teachers-union dominated education establishment here in Massachusetts (or anywhere else) any farther than I could throw them.
So Ive got my eye on them, and they'll hear from me whenever I find them actively trying to indoctrinate my daughter with a left wing political perspective.
So, why not homeschool? It would be a heck of alot less work.
Stay tuned to the situation. Mabey evn ask your daughter questions if the teacher says any nasty comments about the president... i remember back to when i was in elementary school we would draw flags and celebrate patriotism on 'flag day' and other holidays of the like (even though we were 7 or 8 yrs old).. it is necessary to mention that i did go to private school, so the teachers werent held at the jaws of of PC movement as much....
Just raise your daughter to be a proud person and to always work hard at what she dose.. teach her that nothing comes easy and that had work pays off and that if somebody wants to do well in life its never handed to you... you seem like a great parents, keep up the good work and keep us posted!
Did they change the name from 'Neville Chamberlain Day?'
That's not feasible for us, and besides I think it is good for my daughter to have the social interaction with her peers. (I know what homeschoolers think about that, and I don't necessarily disagree with them. I support home schooling, but we have made the judgment to keep her in public school.
Besides, I think I can do an excellent job of countering the indoctrination she gets in school. I believe in innoculating her against the left wing agenda, and teaching her to recognize when her teachers are wrong and how to stand up for what's right. Public school gives her an opportunity to do that, as long as I pay attention and stay involved.
If I turn out to be wrong about that, I may reconsider our decision. But for now she will stay where she is.
Just read that to my husband - he asked if they shouldn't rename it "Pinheads for Peace" day.
I'm all for peace but this project clearly has a political agenda so I say as long as this is politicizaed already we can play at that game too. Do they get to decorate or write on them. It would be great to put something like
Peace has a price
Fight for peace
support our troops making Iraq a peaceful nation
Freedom isn't free
or some such, I sure some freepers can think of something better ideas to convey the notion that while war is terrible thing it is sometimes neccesary for the long-term peace of the world
My daughter's school turned this idea down, which took some of the sting out of them rejecting my "Windchimes for War" project.

(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
I like peace, too. And I was living in perfect peace with my Muslim brothers and sisters, until 19 of them murdered 3,000 of my innocent fellow citizens.
This is a great opportunity to teach her how to pick her charities or what she should 'tithe' to.
Our Lutheran School has Jump Rope for Heart which is a misnomer since it is actually a 'anti-tobacco' lobby party. I refuse to 'sponsor' my son and I don't let him ask the neighbors for sponsoring and I teach him why. tobacco is made by God, what we do with it is up to us. But tobacco has its uses.
I only use the above as an example at our house. We have also kept our son home if a field trip was going on that we did not approve of. That only happened once tho.
If you do not approve of the UN then tell her why. Ask her to ask you questions and the teacher questions. (Some teachers really hate it when you question pc).
That's every day in Afghanistan and Iraq . . and THANK GOD !
ROTFL.
Because every day is "Kick a Radical Muslim Terrorist's Butt Day"!
More like, "Pinheads for Peace".

Note: September 21 is International Peace Day.
I felt much the same way after our oldest son had been through K and 1st grade. He's now in 4th grade. I predict your attitude will change significantly.
That's so beautiful I've got a tear in my eye! You don't mind if I suggest this idea to our kids' school, do you?
I encourage you to anticipate your daughters needs. My youngest was quite prepared the day a high school teacher suggested that the Second Amendment addressed a "collective right". The benefit of my daughter's preparation is that the other students in the class got to hear the truth. The teacher's assertion was rejected by the class.
sauropod's kids were involved in this too. We found out after the fact and just about blew our stacks.
I was half expecting to see a field of pinwheels at this weekend's anti-war rally in DC, but apparently Display Day was yesterday?
Still very suspicious, and trying to find out more...
