Aruba court lifts curbs on three suspects

ORANJESTAD, Aruba (AP) -- A court ruled Wednesday that three suspects in the disappearance of a U.S. teenager can remain free without conditions -- overturning an earlier decision that restricted their travel and required them to remain available to investigators.

The appeals court ruled there was a "lack of sufficient grounds and serious suspicions" to keep the restrictions on Joran van der Sloot and two Surinamese brothers, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, the Aruban prosecutor's office said.

The three young men remain suspects in the May 30 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Holloway, 18, vanished on the final night of a high school graduation trip to the Dutch Caribbean island. Extensive searches have failed to find any trace of her.

Van der Sloot, 18, and the Kalpoe brothers -- the last people seen in public with the American -- were released from jail on September 3 on the condition they remain available for questioning.

Van der Sloot, who is Dutch, has since left for college in Holland, where he traveled with the court's permission. The Kalpoe brothers were barred from leaving Aruba.

Prosecutors filed an appeal seeking to have all three returned to jail, but the court rejected the request and removed the restrictions, said David Kock, a lawyer for 18-year-old Satish Kalpoe.

"They are totally free," Kock said.

No body, no crime. That's the essence of it I think.

Vengence is mine, saith the Lord. They are now in the hands of God, woe to them!

My money's on Natalie's father.

but if you mention Aruba to anyone they will give you a funny look...

Yes, as they should. The obvious corruption in that government is amazing. Those little liars (proven on many occasions) were strictly banking on the body not being found...and who knows, maybe it was...but we will never know nor will the parents of the girl.

Don't send your kids there, unless you don't want them to come back...

This wasn't an isolated incident for these boys. Very soon they will be up to their old tricks and their names will be in the headlines again. People don't change.

No it doesn't, but that was the plan all along. Folks in the US often think our legal system will go with us wherever we travel, but nothing could be further from the truth. I'd boycott Aruba as a vacation site, but I had no plans to go there anyway.

I don't think it was "botched" at all. I think it went exactly as they planned. Remember Vanderslut's father telling him to just be quiet, they couldn't prosecute him without a body. Well, the plan worked.

Try Branson. Nice folks, lots to do, and U.S. laws apply.

They will claim that there is no let down in tourism

Sure. But so far the media, rubber-neckers and those with pre-planned vacations are taking up the slack.

When the Natalee case is over..it will be over for tourism in aruba. Rightfully so.

I have to think that if I was the father of a kid who murdered a girl the last thing I would do is try to help him cover it up.

I would drag him to the jail and tell him to confess or what would happen to him at home would be worse than jail.

I hope he is a pariah in Holland along with his parents.

Well, it sure has proved that "you are on your own" if anything goes wrong. Based on that, I'll cross off Aruba from my vacation list. Too bad, I was there several years ago and really enjoyed it. I don't like what I've seen transpire in the last four months - at all.

"If Americans had ANY sense of self respect and decency and national identity - which they don't - they would boycott Aruba, the Netherlands and all Ducth products from Heinken to Norelcos."

Wrong! If Americans had sense they would boycott the hotel chains that have made major investments in Aruba. Pull those hotels out and the island of Aruba will sink into the ocean.

True. Boycott them too.

But I'd also boycott all Dutch products in addition, as the Dutch government supervises Aruba.

The thought of those three vermin getting away with this drives me to distraction. If I were a younger guy I think I know what I'd do. If I were Natalie's Father, I'd do it.

I hope they all wake up every night with thoughts and visuals of killing Natalee. I don't think they will be pariahs in Holland. From what I have read and heard they are accepting of everything there.

Unlike the poster who want to boycott, I would prefer to go visit. I will be down there in the fall, again, and may invite these boys on a deep sea fishing trip. Accidents often happen on a tossing boat.

The law is the same anywhere. If you can't PROVE a crime, you can't keep someone in jail. Without the evidence of a crime, all they can have is SUSPICION...

They do have a lot of circumstance, but that won't even convict here in the US.

Don't take out your anger on the people on the island. They are trying to make a living, too! I love the place, and the average joe there will give you his shirt, if you need it!

Yeah I wouldn't reccommend sending them there on the philosophy that "well, most of them come back".

Quite a few years back, when we visited friend who used to be in the local government, we warned not to go to the north tip of the Aruba (California lighthouse) beaches after dark. Apparently it was a heaven for airplanes from Columbia to drop the drugs on the beaches and some shady characters wandering around.
Maybe main reason for the "One Happy Island"?
Aruba off the destination list here too!

Barring the discovery of a body with their DNA irrefutably on it, it looks like this case is over.

I agree, and I hope something comes to light with these boys to help solve this case. I really do for the sake of the Holloway family!

"I wonder where my vacation $$$ are going to be spent ??? Certainly not Aruba."

There's more to see and do one island over in Curacao.

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I like Amstel light too much. Boycotting beer and hotels will not bring Natalie back.
