Did anyone see the following Red Cross Television ad ?
I saw what I think has to be the most disgusting tv ad in Red Cross history.
The audio is from memory and went something like this.
I don't look like you. I don't watch the same television programs. I don't laugh at the same jokes. I don't eat the same food. But I will save your life.
The video showed mostly white middle class people going about their lives, washing their car, walking their dog, etc.
And at the end, the video displayed the Red Cross emblem along with the 1-800-GIVE-NOW.
I think the Red Cross just said implied that the Katrina victims were the poor, black underclass and the noble superior white man had nothing in common with these people, but were going to save their lives.
The ad ran in the morning of 9-14-2005 and was on the adelphia cable in Ohio on either the sci fi channel or cnbc. I was channel surfing and could not remember it exactly.

I'm in Ohio now, (temporarily), and I didn't see it. I wish the race thing would just drop already.

To be bluntly honest, virtually nobody who is "white" cares anymore in the least about race. The only ones who are obsessed with their "race" are blacks who want to use it as an instrument of their victimization. (The rest of us are bored with the issue. . .)
That is disgusting, but heres another disgusting thing I came across in local newspaper-- T-H Record, a photo of a emaciated man being taken out of his NO home, and underneath the photo, an article, with the headline, "BUSH TAKES HEAT FOR KATRINA BLUNDER."
Now, is it just me, or was that just a slick liberal newspaper trying to connect Pres. Bush, to that poor man?

I know this had nothing to do with the Red Cross ad, but, had to get this off my mind.
There was an ad like that running in Louisiana way before Katrina, but the one I saw wasn't particularly racial. It just said something like the Red Cross was a place where someone who doesn't look like you or share your views would still be there to help you in your time of need. I think you were supposed to get the idea that your rescuer could be anyone from a grandfather to a green-haired punk rocker, but they all had the same thing in common, a desire to help. Still, I didn't care much for the ad.
The Red Cross is a scam. The CEO of the organization draws a $400,000+ salary for being so caring. The head of the Salvation Army makes app $13,000 for a similar job. Does anyone know the amount of money applied to relief, versus the amount spent in administration in both organizations??
I've seen it and took it to be a "Give Blood" ad but I agree that it's unseemly at this time. The Red Cross ought to pull it (for the same reason I've replaced my "GWB: Saving Your @ss, Like it or Not" bumpersticker with "Bush Para Presidente.")

According to Invisible Church in post 1, the ad you and he saw was the same one I saw and it was running pre Katrina.
I had not seen it until yesterday and I assumed it was racially based even though it may not have been intended to be that way.
Nevertheless, the ad does say "I don't look like you" which is pretty bad no matter how you slice it. As soon as you say "I don't not look like you.", you a dividing people along a very superficial interpretation and possibly stigmatizing one, both, or all parties.
And the punch line that goes "I will save your life" is very arrogant and condescending, pre or post Katrina.
According to Fox News (several days ago - Major Garret), the Red Cross has 8 - 9% overhead, whereas the Salvation Army has said 100% of contributions will go the people in need (at least for Katrina....).
Don't even THINK about the "United Way"....

Good advice. If you go through the list of organizations that the United Way supports, you will surely find quite a few with which you will have serious philosophical and moral objections.
I saw a representative from a group called Charity Navigator, on tv the other night.
The site has charities organized for a quick look, you can click on each link and see a breakdown of their revenues, including administrative expenses.

The narrator in the tv ad "sounds" like a white woman.
"Surprisingly" enough, if you sort the list by "Charitable Commitment" the very, very bottom of the list is none other than:
William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation
....Coming in last with a "giving" 31% commitment. That means 69% of the charity is being skimmed for "Administrative Costs".
Gee.....Whoda thunk it?
