Circle of Liberty, or Crescent of Embrace? - The Flight 93 Memorial
JEFFHEAD.COM ^ | 14-Sep-2005 | Jeff Head

The decision on what shape and form the memorial to Flight 93 will take is nearing finalization. If you remember, Flight 93 was the one airliner on 911 where the passengers had the time and the opportunity to fight back and end the plans of the murderous terrorists who had hijacked them. Who will ever forget the heroic words of Tod Beamer as he charged the terrorists with his fellow Americans? ""God help me. Jesus help me. Are you ready? Let's roll." " In making that charge and ending the terrorists murderous plans, they became heroes and delivered a victory to the American people in the midst of that day of attack and terror.

Amazingly, the design that is being finalized is called the "Crescent of Embrace", and includes a landscaping of the memorial that is a red crescent, which closely resembles the principle symbol of Islam and the symbol most meanigful to those murderous animals who the members of the Flight 93 passengers and crews defeated, at a cost of their own lives. Here's what that final design is depicted to look like:

Whether intentional or not, such a design in my opinion, and I believe to most Americans, is unacceptable. In no way should we memorilize the sacrifice and heroic actions of those brave Americans with anything that could remotely be construed to represent the symbol of the very enemies against whom they fought.

After considering it a few days, I have come up with a design of my own. I call it the "Circle of Liberty". Here it is:

The idea of this design is meant to be clearly all-American. There is a minature of the Statue of Liberty at the center, at the site of the crash. Surrounding that statue, are forty landscaped stars, each one with a central area containing a plaque memoralizing that specific passenger. Each star has a path that leads to the statuesignifying the individual path each trod to that fateful day and their sacrifice for liberty in the first resistance in the war that began that day.

This design also has a major entry from east or west, signifying the breadth of our nation and its coming together. In addition, all of the stars in the circle are tied together by a path leading in a circle between them all, signifying the unity and "closed circle" we as Americans must have in fighting and defeating this enemy...even as those passengers in crew were united in their sacrifice.

I believe that such a design is much more fitting and representative of our needs as a nation in this struggle and as we remember those who sacrificed all on 911, particularly the brave souls fighting their enemies on Flight 93. If I, as an admitted untalented and non-professional architect or landscape artist could come up with something such as this, surely the professionals tasked with presnting proposals to the US givernment could do the same.

If you are unhappy with the chosen design above, the "Crescent of Embrace", please contact the US Park Service at the Official Fight 93 Memorial Web Site and register your feelings.

Amen! and thank you for that sentiment. The monument simply must contain a proper tribute to those patriots and their sentiments, best expressed by Tod Beamer himself..."God help me. Jesus help me. Are you ready? Let's roll".

A scripture, particularly the one you cite, would help do that in a very good way.

When you look at this monument and its proposed design, and when you look at the one proposed for ground zero, it is clear, at least to me, that there is an organized effort...or at least a sickening xentmiment amongst far too many in our nation, that would wholly thwart and manipulate and corrupt the effort to fight and win this war.

Thta could wellbe...or simply taken advantage of. Or, as we see with the likes of Cindy Sheehan, there could also be those amongst them who harbor feelings that would pit them against the very sacrifices their loved ones made.

I do not know...I just know that for me, as an American whose tax mones will go towards paying for and maintaining this monumnet, this design is totally unaccaptable for the reasons already cited.

Bingo! Spot on! We must do all we can to communicate that exact sentiment to the planners and our elected leaders.

Thank you...my design is not important...it was just something I came up with after a couple of days of thought...and a part of that was getting past my own anger and frustration and disgust at what was being proposed. If I can come up with something like this...I know they can find some patriotic American who is a professional designer to come up with something a lot better.

JUlie, thank YOU! for making that information available and all you have done and are doing to turn this around. God bless you for those efforts which I know are bearing much fruit. It is the very spirit of the America our founders established and that we all love and cherish.

That it does...sounds like some mushy thinking, fuzzy logic, PC way of capitulating to me.

The embrace those Islamics terrorists deserved and GOT from the heropes on flight 93 was a CRUSHING, FATAL embrace. THAT is what we also need to remember as being what it takes to defeat them and their radical ideology, hate and plans for conquest and death.

As I said to editor-surveyor, the only "embrace" that those terrorists deserved was a crushing, fatal one that crushed the very life out of them.

That was what was needed and exactly what the heroes on flight 93 delivered, at the ultimate cost of their own lives and the preservation of untold hundred of other innocent Americans,

I believe millions of Americans...tens of millions would be equally outraged and equally clear thinking if they knew what was going on. The numbers of those who do is growing and it will make a difference.

Exactly...the monument should contain a clear expression of Tod Beamer's rally cry..."God help me. Jesus help me. Are you ready? Let's roll".

FYI...please consider a mega-ping. We need as many people to get involved as possible and spread the word to help get this turned around completely.

Thank you, the design really is travesty. I just scrolled through the posts and went back to the added memorial for Viet Nam and read Todd Beamer's last 4 sentences in his life. To think that these brave souls were armed with prayers and a coffee pot of hot coffee and took on the terrorists really gets me teary eyed and angry at the same time. Their bravery and sacrifice, I can not even imagine. I pray that I will NEVER be in their situation and pray that if I ever were, I would be strong enough to do the same thing. May God bless them and especially their families. I will continue to try to get a proper memorial for them.

This effort to get a more appropriate Memorial is very dear to my heart.

I have been to Shanksville and stood by that field. Like you, I'm determined that America will create an honorable Memorial for those Forty Angels who fought the terrorists!

Thank you for all you are doing to make that happen!

My husband watched "The Flight That Fought Back" last night (I Tivo'd it cause he wasn't available when it aired.) When it was over he said it should be required viewing for everyone who thinks we should just move on. I told him that I hope they keep airing stuff like that around 9/11 every year ~ I want to watch something that makes me angry anew. NEVER forget. EVER. Hubby even said he wants to put that show onto a tape so we can keep it. That's BIG for him.

I have forwarded your post to my friends.

Thanks for forwarding this...I pray many others will read of this travesty and forward it to their friends.

I agree that we should always remember what occurred on 911...and not let the images fade from our memory, our minds, or our hearts.

I created a site that I will keep up as long as I have the means and as long as I have breath to that very end.

THE ATTACK ON AMERICA SITE
