We'll take two 8-by-10s and a dozen wallet-sized: Now that Junior is 2-1/2 months old, it's high time for the meerkat family to have their portrait done at the San Diego Zoo.

89% humidity displaced by 100% rain.

Add sweating under raingear and we're off the charts.

I'm sorry, Gold.....what can I say. The whole sci-fi thingy just never took hold. As much as I love reading, no science fiction. Just never got into it. Here, maybe this will make up for it.

I just sent him an e-mail.

THIS is my role model!

"During his 10 years of duty, Kunz has conducted more than 650 exams, making him one of the Coast Guard Auxiliary's most experienced and hardest working examiners, the citation reads."

For his effort and initiative as a commercial fishing boat examiner,
Harwich resident and assistant harbormaster Frank Kunz, and longtime staff officer of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, was awarded the Bob Childs Auxiliary Award, one of the Coast Guard's First District's highest awards. The presentation was made at a Coast Guard luncheon in New Bedford.

Harwich Harbormaster Tom Leach said the award is a "big deal."

"There are a handful of guys in the Coast Guard Auxiliary who are doing a really great job and he's one of them," said Leach. The citation called Kunz's superior performance in keeping with the "highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard."

Referring to "extraordinary initiative," the citation said that Kunz established a training and mentoring program for members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary interested in qualifying as commercial fishing vessel examiners. That initiative led to the First District consistently being recognized as one of the top achievers in examining fishing vessels.

Kunz also is credited with starting a safety program with the Cape Cod Hook Fishermen's Association, requiring all members to receive an annual dockside exam as well as safety drill training each year. Participation in the program has increased substantially every year due to Kunz's leadership.

During his 10 years of duty, Kunz has conducted more than 650 exams, making him one of the Coast Guard Auxiliary's most experienced and hardest working examiners, the citation reads. He was also credited with wearing inflatable suspenders during his exams to demonstrate their value to fishermen.

"One of the highest satisfactions that one can experience in life is the certain knowledge that one's actions contributed to saving the life of another. Mr. Kunz can experience that satisfaction," reads the citation.

Kunz said his interest in the Coast Guard Auxiliary stems from his four years' service in U.S. Navy. He served on a submarine tender in Key West and the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal, cruising the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and North Atlantic. Following his stint in the Navy he moved to East Hartford, where he worked for Pratt & Whitney for 30 years.

"I always wanted to have a boat," he said. A year before he retired, in 1989, he took a Coast Guard boating course. He moved to Harwich in 1990. Within a week he joined Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 1101 in Chatham. "My bags were not even unpacked and I joined the auxiliary."

Two years later he finally bought his motorboat. He's since turned it in for a smaller one, which he uses exclusively for Coast Guard Auxiliary patrols. He maintains a crew of three people. On a typical weekend during the boating season, they put in between four and eight hours on the water.

Kunz said it took two years of training to be certified as a commercial fishing examiner. He's been one since 1992. As an examiner, Kunz "walks the docks" from Provincetown to Bass River examining fishing vessels. He checks their hulls and safety equipment, everything from flares to life rafts.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer force that acts as a force multiplier for the Coast Guard, conducting safety patrols, towing vessels in distress, and performing search and rescue missions. It also conducts voluntary safety inspections of both recreational and commercial vessels.

"We're basically the eyes and ears of the Coast Guard when we're out there," said Kunz.

Welcome to the Canteen, pandemoniumreigns. I just could never get into any of the sci-fi stuff....not books, tv, or movies. I did see, sortof, a couple Star Wars movies because my best friend used to pay my way if I would take her boys to the movies. LOL!
