Bush Takes Milder Tone on Terrorism Wednesday, September 14, 2005 / 10 Elul 5765
(IsraelNN.com) President George W. Bush told the United Nations on Wednesday that world leaders must change conditions which he said cause people to turn to terrorism and that war by itself will not defeat terrorism. "There can be no safety in looking away or seeking the quiet life by ignoring the hardship and oppression of others," Bush said.
His speech was milder than his previous calls for a world-wide war against terrorism. "We know that this war will not be won by force of arms alone," the president said.
Defend Bush.

These terrorists kill not merely to end lives, but to disrupt and end a way of life. With every atrocity, they hope that America grows fearful, retreating from the world and forsaking our friends. They stand against us, because we stand in their way.
We are not deceived by their pretenses to piety. We have seen their kind before. They are the heirs of all the murderous ideologies of the 20th century. By sacrificing human life to serve their radical visions -- by abandoning every value except the will to power -- they follow in the path of fascism, and Nazism, and totalitarianism. And they will follow that path all the way, to where it ends: in history's unmarked grave of discarded lies. (Applause.)
Americans are asking: How will we fight and win this war? We will direct every resource at our command -- every means of diplomacy, every tool of intelligence, every instrument of law enforcement, every financial influence, and every necessary weapon of war -- to the disruption and to the defeat of the global terror network.
This war will not be like the war against Iraq a decade ago, with a decisive liberation of territory and a swift conclusion. It will not look like the air war above Kosovo two years ago, where no ground troops were used and not a single American was lost in combat.
Our response involves far more than instant retaliation and isolated strikes. Americans should not expect one battle, but a lengthy campaign, unlike any other we have ever seen. It may include dramatic strikes, visible on TV, and covert operations, secret even in success. We will starve terrorists of funding, turn them one against another, drive them from place to place, until there is no refuge or no rest. And we will pursue nations that provide aid or safe haven to terrorism. Every nation, in every region, now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists. (Applause.) From this day forward, any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime.
Do we have to feel their pain, too? No one is "forced" to turn to terrorism.
Is Bush going "wobbly"?
One of Bush's MAIN approaches to fighting terrorism has ALWAYS been to create a free state of Iraq, in the middle of the Arab world because he knows that people who are free and NOT oppressed and poor are less likely to recruited by terrorists.
There is nothing new about this at all.
The 9/11 hijackers were oppressed and poor?

Since President Bush was addressing the UN and the large number of world leaders present, my defense (as if Bush needs defending)would be that our President was referencing the fact that most of those world leaders present today do not lead Democratic governments.
Trying to plant the seed of democracy in Iraq will be short lived if at all and we will be out much wealth and too many lives.
Maybe midnight basketball will help.
