U.S. Lincoln Chafee leads Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey by 44 to 24 percent in the race for the Republican Senatorial nomination, according to a new statewide survey conducted by researchers at Brown University. On the Democratic side, former Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse is ahead of Secretary of State Matt Brown by 32 to 16 percent.
The survey was conducted September 10-11, 2005, at Brown University by Darrell M. West, director of the Taubman Center for Public Policy and the John Hazen White Sr. Public Opinion Laboratory. It is based on a statewide random sample of 449 registered voters in Rhode Island. Overall, the poll had a margin of error of about plus or minus 5 percentage points.
If the general election were held today, Senator Chafee has an advantage of 38 to 25 percent over Whitehouse (up from 41 to 36 percent in June). If Brown were the Democratic nominee, Chafees lead grows to 41 to 18 percent (up from 44 to 29 percent in June).
If the Republican nominee is Mayor Laffey, Whitehouse is ahead by 35 to 25 percent (comparable to the 45 to 32 percent Whitehouse had in June). If the nominees are Laffey and Brown, Brown has a slight advantage of 30 to 26 percent over Laffey (compared to 40 to 30 percent in June).

There appears to be a growth in the undecided vote. This is probably a plus for Laffey, who's the least-known of the four candidates right now.
Man what a weak state.
What else do you expect from the home state of Peter Griffith.
Dales had some pretty good comments re: the Brown U. poll: http://dalythoughts.com/?p=4288
In a nutshell: Very small sample (less than 500), and if only Republicans were polled on the GOP Senate primary then it would have a huge MOE. And Brown U. doesn't push for leaners, hence the large number of undecideds.
It's Peter *Griffin* that lives in Quahog, Rhode Island. Peter Griffith is probably Andy Taylor's cousin from Mount Pilot, NC.
Chafee is what is called a RINO (Repubican In Name Only)
For all of the long years he has been in Congress this man has been a stealth Democrat.
The Peoples Republic of Rhode Island now have two socialists running for Congress.
No matter who gets in, we'll have a commy in the seat.
The word is the RNC sent a half million to Chafee to help him hold his seat.
Why?
Whitehouse is a easy going dunce.
He's be the best choice.
Laffey is a Communitarian, open borders piece of crud.Worst of the lot.
Brown is just a raving ACLU bolshevik nutcase.
He'd be second best, a weak minded honest little commy.
A weak enemy is better than a traitor.
That's the best you can get from Rogue's Island.
That's why he gets the honeys. See?
What's up with Abraham Lincoln tying the Aqua Teens to a rocket on the closing credits? I know he sold poisoned milk to schoolchildren (well, that's what Homer Simpson said), but why would Abe attack good Republicans such as Frylock and Meatwad? (Master Shake is a Commie and a pervert, but that's another story.)
Remember, kids, any Republican voting for Chafee is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.
I'm releived to say that Laffey has improved his standing since his announcement. He's running almost even with Matt Brown.
Laffey is a Communitarian. He is the most dangerous of the bunch.
Someone should tell Brown University that an incumbent in a two-way race who is running 6% below the 50% level is in deep doo-doo.
"Laffey is a Communitarian. He is the most dangerous of the bunch."
He's only running for his second full term.
Chafee is under 10% conservative, probably tied with Matt Brown.
Laffey is at best 20-25%, probably less than Whitehouse, who I would give a 30.
Laffey will stab the conservatives in the back as often as Chafee. I'd rather see a weak enemy in office than a strong traitor.
At least everybody knows Chafee is a traitor. Laffey will be in a position to do more damage.
And why on earth would the party give Chafee money and aid in his campaign?
I find it impossible to support a party that would support Chafee.
